To be honest I don't know what kind it is or from what family But this season I have never seen one sooo Big.. This one hovered and landed here for 15 minutes I watched it untill it fluttered to the neighbors yard ... the picture doesn't really show how big it is , I imagine the wing span was around 4-6"

Angelblossom, your butterfly appears to be a Spicebush Swallowtail according to eNature.com and their online butterfly field guide. I knew it was a swallowtail, but didn't know what kind.

That is one beautiful butterfly-and a really good picture !
I LOVE butterflies.
My favorite is a clear yellow one that looks like a tang fish.
Anyone know what it might be?

Very, very pretty picture.......butterflies are natures own yard ornaments--especially when they land like that and spread their wings open. thumbup

Diane - great pictures!

I thought this was a Black Tiger Swallowtail - did a google image search there is just a little distinction between the two - good eye, Thorny!

The larger butterflys are rather tame and docile and it is fairly easy to get GOOD close pictures of them. Now Painted Ladies or Skippers are a different story altogether laugh
