I know the Hollyhock took a hit last night and wilted. But I can't convince myself to go out back and see if the lettuce survived. I'm such a chicken.

At least I did harvest some of the leaves this week so I got to taste them.

What kind of lettuce was it Tammy???

Some of the romaine lettuce's or swiss chard
can withstand a wee~bit of cold weather/frost like temps...

Lettuce, in general, is very cold hardy.

I know how you feel Tammy...When we had our first frost...it was a hard one, and I just peeked outside through the window, and everything looked all gone from there, except for Calendula, it is still hanging in there blooming like mad still after about a dozen heavy frosts.

You all gave me the courage to go look. And it's still hanging in strong. Your right Weezie it's the romaine type of lettuce. But I still picked as much as I could off of each plant just in case lol. That way I won't mind if Jack Frost gets his share.

Does home grown romaine taste like the store kind, or better?
I would grow some if I thought it would be sweeter-sometimes I get a weird, bitter tasting head of romaine.
Don't know why, but iceberg gives me a bad stummyache. That's hard to understand since iceberg is mostly water, right?

The romaine lettuce I grow does have a wee~bit of bitter taste, but I put "aged" apple vinegar and kosher salt and all the flavors work great together..

And if you grow that lettuce and let it over winter, you'll end up with seeds....

I put a tarp over my romaine lettuce and swiss chard for the winter, and I had my swiss chard and romaine both give me seeds...

I only did it once with the romaine..
but I might think in your area it would over winter better/easier...
And when it did seed, I ended up having a free year of more veggies that I didn't sow, but I don't like doing that putting things in the same place... so this year, I did not put the tarp over it and will let them fend for themselves...
