I have 4 butterfly bushes that were purchased this summer. I have not had time to get them in the ground. Living in southern Michigan, is it too late to plant them? If so, is there any way that I can preserve them to plant next year?

Not too late. Better to plant them, then to leave them in containers, above ground over the winter.

I'd plant them now too if the ground hasn't frozen. I don't think they'd overwinter well in pots.

It is better to plant them but if you have to hold them above ground I would put them in a sheltered location and mulch up to about 2 to 4 inches above the pots. They would have a good chance of making it especially if you have a lot of snow.
