We're in zone 8 - need some advice on what tree/shrub to plant that grows quickly to make a privacy screen? I have some very small Leyland cypress and a couple of Arborvitae, but is there something that grows faster?

How about eastern red cedar trees ? We planted 21 at the first of the year to screen our view of our neighbor's junky yard...

There aren't many trees that grow faster than Leyland Cypress. Thuja 'Green Giant' does, but it probably will not fare well in the southern heat.

JohnCT is right on the money about the Leyland.

There's the golden green variety in that group called Castlewellan Cypress that might be interesting to have.

The Leyland grows so fast, I put a page on my website referring to "Does money grow on trees" with Leyland almost supplying a yes to that.

They will be the big money makers for tree services in the next few decades.

Thanks everyone! Looks like I'll have to be a little more patient with our Leyland cypress.
They were about 4 inches tall but in six months they have grown almost 16 inches.
We paid $20 for 40 of them (as liners) back in May of this year.

Lombardy Poplars are popular screen trees. They grow 6 feet per year.

theres lots of trees that grow faster. Take the maple trees for example and see how fast they grow or the flowered trees for example.

The fastest growing tree I know of is the Empress tree aka Royal Paulonia (sp.?) They sometimes grow 12 feet per year, but reproduce prolifically from seed, though, and aren't great for screens. The Leyland is the fastest growing of any of the dense evergreens that I have ever seen. If you've seen 16 inches growth already, expect 3 to 4 feet next year and several consecutive years beyond.

But they are deciduous and very messy.
