Hello, gang!

I have many geraniums that I try to keep over the winter....

Is there any way that I can better keep these wonderful plants so that the can go a little dormant over the winter and pick it up again next spring?

I have kept them roughed up in my heated garage....watering them every other week or so....not bothering with them too much....allowing them to be neglected....and then putting them out in the spring.

Ok....so...is there a better way???? Please let me know. I love my geraniums......they have become my favorite.....mostly because they have lasted over the winter and can be revived in the spring.

Any and all comments welcome!

Barb

Although I've never tried this, I've heard and read that many people cut them back, take them out of their pots, remove the soil, put them in paper bags and place the bags in a cool place. Then in the spring you replant. It's supposed to work quite well. Perhaps someone whose actually done this can comment.

I did that last year with some standard red geranium/pelargonium (it was me buying at Wal-Mart, who knows what it is?). I had read to soak the roots once a month as well. Um, have I mentioned that I tend to forget? I managed to remember to soak them twice between October and May. Out of I think 4 root bundles (or whatever they are called), only one came back, but it never bloomed even though it was put in the same place it bloomed in last summer. I may have brought it out of dormancy late, though; that's what I keep telling myself. That's my experience.

I also read recently that cutting them back and watering them is instructing them to grow NOW, which is not what we want them to do. I think that person suggested to leave it in the pot of dirt in a dark cool spot, and in Feb/March give it a drink, and when you see some growth then start treating it like you normally would again, gradually introducing it to light, that type of thing. That's my plan... my problem is right now:

As of today it still has green leaves on it, as do my ivy pelargonium which I want to try to overwinter dormant as well, and I'm trying to decide what to do now.... I'm getting a little tired of moving them in and out every night (temps are really low 30s at night but mid 50s in the day).

Would putting them in the (cooler and dark) garage now force them into dormancy, or just kill them because they didn't go dormant first?

Watching this thread with interest....

thumbup Good link there Bill!

I always overwinter mine downstairs in the bathroom basement in front of the window...I rarely water them, leave them totally alone other than that....once spring comes I just cut them back and they grow.....I think I've only ever lost one of them.

This years geraniums are even more important and special to me because I grew them from seeds and I want to keep them going. thumbup

Thanks, everyone!

Seems like I'm doing the best thing I can for my geraniums. I don't have a lot of light, except for one window and a TON of plants. However, I do have a small grow light that I keep on during the day.

I've had some of these geraniums for about three years so far and I'm quite attached to them.

I've also been interested in the scented geraniums and while they have only ever gotten bushy when planted outside....and rather spindly inside since I don't have a lot of sun, I really enjoy the scents.

I'll be interested in watching for more geranium type info. Thanks so much everyone for responding.

Hey, Loz!

Ok, I know this is probably a silly question...but I have no idea how to harvest seeds from geraniums!! laugh

How do ya?? I'd love to try it and see what happens. I heard that geraniums are hard to grown from seeds....funny that, since they are such sturdy and hardy flowers.
