I have a 3 foot diffenbachia and need to stake it so it doesn't fall over. The stem of the plant is about 2 1/2" in diameter. Hardly plant but getting very heavy

hi dutch! welcome to the garden helper.

we have a a diffenbachia like that at work. we used 3 bamboo stakes (the kind you buy at a garden center) and put them around it and tied it with light weight rope.

my little sister has one that she used a broom handle to stake (it is about 5 ft tall)

another good way to tie plants off is to use old pantyhose. they give as the plant grows and are usually easier to untie when you need to.

well, what i would do, is get some of those bamboo stakes and place them an equal distance around your plant, forming a "teepee". that should do it, it has worked so far on the one at work.
