My plants have a grey scale forming on the lower stems and covering many of the leaves. Is this a disease or the result of some insect infestation?

A photograph of the affected areas would be very helpful (e-mail it to me if you have one). It is possible that the grey areas are just the outer layers of the leaves maturing and becoming woody rather than an illness or infestation. (this is especially possible with regard to the leaves at the base of the plant...)

Have you checked the Plant Pests and Problems page to see if the photo of Scale looks like what is on your plant?

We have a easter cactus that did not blume this year but continues to grow. what could be wrong?

The blooming of Easter cactus is triggered by the number of hours of day and night, just like Christmas cactus. If they are kept in a room where you have artificial light during the evening hours the plant will think it is always August and not go through the gradual change of the seasons and only put a few flowers out at odd times of the year.
If you move it to a room that stays lighted roughly like the natural light outdoors in early January and feed it with half-strength "bloom" fertilizer when you see new growth, it will probably be blooming for Easter.
