Just wondering what the difference is? I planted a rose of sharon last year and this year I had this stick there and nothing was happening. I heard they were slow to restart in the spring, so I waited. Now all of a sudden, it has a tiny green bud down near the soil level. Do I cut the stick once the new growth gets going or do I leave it entirely alone? Thanks.

Hi Fernie,
Hibiscus's/rose of Sharon's are extremely slow
in going to bud..*do you know what growing zone you are?* I'm a zone 5 and I'll have a DEAD STICK for quite some time now...

I'd give it a chance to "wake~up" a wee~bit
before I chopped it.. just to make sure???

I just meant cut the "stick" when the little bud was starting to show what it was doing...like be a couple inches long or so. I could wait longer if need be. I am in zone 6a....but the rose of Sharon is on the southwest side of my house and sort of protected from the wind and I mulched everything good with straw and sycamore leaves this past winter so as to protect things. I just pulled all that winter covering off about a month ago. The Hollyhocks next to it are about 18 inches tall.

Fernie go ahead and cut the dead stick back it wont hurt the plant. I cut my Luna Blush and Luna Red even with the ground last fall they are about 8" tall now and very pretty. I also cut back two hardies last winter still waiting on them as well as one Texas Star Hibiscus which they come back late probably in mid June or July. thumbup
Good Luck
Jimmy

my seedling that I grew last year has not quiet woke up yet and I'm way way way south of you in zone 8b,but my 2 ROS trees are full of leaves now& can see a few seedlings in amoung the iris.silly me traded some of my bluebird seedlings for what was suppose to be pink ROS& I swear looks alot like my bluebird, but can tell is different, but it sure didn't bloom pink.so hopefully one of my trades of seeds will actually bloom pink.

I trimmed my "stick" down to about 6 inches tall yesterday. It was hollow and easy to cut. The little bud has grown a bunch already!

I planted astilbe "bulbs" (?) about a month ago and the plants are now about 5 or 6 inches tall. The bleeding heart that I didn't know if it would make it? Getting up close to 10 inches. I planted one ( eek ) foxglove and it is going great guns itself.

Now if I can just get this camera figured out, I will show it to you all.
