wavey I have been looking into purchasing some foxgloves. I cant believe I never really noticed them before.I saw a recent magazine story on a fairy garden and it was adorned with foxgloves and delphiniums. Are the plants I buy at the nursery going to bloom this year or will they wait till next year confused ? I also saw somewhere where the plants only last 2-3 years. Do they spread themselves through seed or splitting muggs
Thanks

Foxglove produces a runner, and I have seen the seeds for sale so there is that too. Of course that means the plant isn't always where you want it to be from year to year lol. I'm a bit of a control freak so it didn't work well for me.

I've never grown Delphiniums but Foxgloves grow wild here. A nursery bought Foxglove should bloom the first year. They readily re-seed and there will usually be a dozen or more seedlings within a few feet of the parent plant. Young plants are easy to transplant if you don't like where they decided to grow.

BFVISION,
Yep to what Bill said..
I had bought a six pack...of mixed colors,
a bunch of years back...*no flowers were on the
6 pack, so, it was pot luck...

*I wanted the dark pink/purple color like my
granny had...*
I got all of the light pastel pink one's..
I was bummed..

but each year since, I've gotten flowers
******allllll over the place...********
And they've eventually mutated enough, and
I have yellow one's, and light and dark pink,
and one that almost looked white and a peach colored one...

Sooooooo, have fun with them..
They're fun, and they pop up in all the neatest places...
Just remember what the leaves look like,
cause you don't want to be pullin' up the babies.

Yes, on the momma plants are not long lived,
but do reseed prolifically...

Delphiniums can be a bit more tempermental..
Needing good drainage and lot's of sun....
I've had a few, but didn't last long..
I may have planted them a bit deep..
and I know I had it was growing too close to a
volunteer Phlox...
It got crowded out. ters
I know they produce seeds.
But never had them reseed at all like the foxgloves...

I love foxglove the best way to get lots of colors is to start them from seed thats how I got mine their very easy to start & theirs one var. that blooms the first year I grow dozens from seed & gave all kinds away they were almost every color I had a pink one that got flower spikes almost 13ft tall I,ve never had one that big since I think it was the goat manure I used it was outstanding, seeds are the way to go if you want alot with little cost.

I too love Foxgloves and I had a lot 3 years ago. Each year though, they have been getting less and less. Duh

This year I do not have even one Foxglove and I am totally bummed. What I do have, however, are lots of what looked like Foxgloves but when they get bigger they turn into some kind of stalk that looks like a yellow ear of corn.

Does anyone know what these are? I feel like they are a weed and I want to get rid of them before they go to seed. They come up like a Foxglove.

Help please.

Just curious...Why would you pull it? Mullein has medicinal properties, especially for certain lung ailments.

Mullein is another wildflower growing on Cedar Hill. Personally, I think is a pretty plant with a pretty flower. I've never thought of them as invasive....

Storm,
I have to say, I am a wild flower weed lover..
With that said, I keep mine, as long as they're
in a place that won't be harmful to something else I like..(Like crowding other plants out and too big for the area it's in..)
I always have at least one growing here,
somewhere's..
*and yes they are of medicinal value,
I don't use them, but they are good
potiential in that factor.*
I've never found that plant too invasive...
It's infant stage is very reconizable,
it looks like Lamb's Ear.
All soft and very fuzzy...

It does get very tall..one long slender stalk, and pretty yellow flowers on it...
The beneficials like it...

I can re~seed, but pull them up where you don't like them.. but get them young, as it has a very lonnnnnnnnnnnng tap root *drought tolerant plant*

I've never had them get outta hand here...
Always a conversation with passing neighbors' who don't know what it is, as to how tall it is...

I would have to say, every gardener is different, and each has his/hers' own style.. and although I keep mine, as does Bill and Cricket, it may not be right for your garden...
But I could say, try it once, if it's a baby sized right now, "move it to the back 40" and leave it grow on the outskirts and give it a test run there..

Hope that helps a wee~bit more...

I'm not against an attractive weed growing here and there and I love most wild flowers that are native to our area. This one however, is not one I care for much. It will get too tall for the bed it's in but most of all, I don't want it going to seed.

Thanks for everyone's discovery and imput on this. You always learn something new coming here.

I need to side with Storm on this one. We first started noticing this plant about 5 years ago around here. It seemed like overnight these things started popping up in assorted places and just looked to out of place that we started calling them the "alien plant". So glad to finally be able to put a name to them.

Hey Gang wavey ,

We got a little sidetracked here (LOL).
Is this the result of foxgloves fizzling out or just a coincidence Duh ?
