I met this poet
She told me to write
Write the truth, write your heart, write the ugly and the beautiful
Write my pain and suffering?
Who would want to listen to me whine?
But I started saying true things
I started writing fears
Hauled around my book
Poured my soul in constantly
Came one day, I was so down that even my cathartic release in writing was denied.
I wanted to discuss it with a friend, so I handed her my book
Thinking she would struggle through the page I"d written and sympathize with me
She read the page, then everything I"d written
Started discussing the author with me as if neither of us knew who he was
A man came from across the room
I"ve watched you write these many weeks
Now you"ve let it go, can I read it too?
And suddenly, all the coffeehouse regulars were passing my heart around
Agreeing, disagreeing, and accepting my emotions
Valid, worthy of existence because they existed
Freedom

Quote

(Example of the writings of those days…)
Puppy Dog Heart
I"ve been waiting for permission
To fall in love with you
So as not to waste emotion
Or feel pain
But the simple truth
Told simply
Is my heart has gone ahead
And laid down at your feet
Turned over on its back
And asked you for a belly rub
And I stand back embarrassed
At my shameless, brazen heart
And wish that I could be
As simple as it is

Puppy Dog Heart
I've been waiting for permission
To fall in love with you
So as not to waste emotion
Or feel pain
But the simple truth
Told simply

And asked you for a belly rub
And I stand back embarrassed

As simple as it is
That is so sweet it made a tear (or two) leak out of my eyes.

(Sorry...I cry a lot shocked .....and laugh a lot.)

Good stuff Dan!

Word choice is everything in poetry. In poetry, great ideas are made or muddled with a single word. Poets can spend a whole day on a single word - emily dickenson drove herself nuts wanting just the right word.

Poetry is the hardest of the arts.

Again, your Puppy dog Heart is onto something very very special.

I like the first piece to, but it headed towards being a limerick - They are great exercises and can lead you to writing great poetry.

I really want to hear more about your being a 21st Century dad - those are uncharted waters. Speak up!!
