Okay after my Willys had their last fall gathering here I planted in a variety of sedum. This is located in the hottest dryest sunniest side of the yard.. I also want some type of cascading flower incorporated here that is heat drought tolerant,, will Aubieta whitewell gem flowers work here?? If soo when should I plant the seeds?? any other suggestions??

I'm curious to know if some periwinkle might work in there. Sedum, however, should take you there - I started growing the stuff way back in the mid nineties - just from pickings - all you need is a little pinch and it gets going. I like the red stuff.

Ohhhh Carly I looked up periwinkle!! I know it as Vinca , I'd forgotten it's also know as periwinkle I rellly think it would be great there! I had some last year in the front yard around a tree and it really took off and got thick and lush but then again there was part shade in the front and it looked great.. I will give it a try this spring to see if it can tolerate no shade at all. Thanks for the suggestion!!!

I agree - vinca/periwinkle would look great there! How about some ice plant? I've not had luck with it here, but the leaves are succulent and it has some very pretty, bright flowers!

it IS really pretty!! i put some in this one spot next to my driveway...it's a small slope that i'm going to modify by putting in a retaining wall and then even out the grade. the vinca is just a temporary measure to avoid further erosion. it took over the area really nicely! it gets full sun for most of the day...
it's supposed to be for sun or shade. i see this all over the place - any area where it's shady the stuff grows, just doesn't spread too well.
so, the key with the vinca is to put it in a nice sunny spot!

no, not iceplant. they are pink sundials aka portulaca. they'd look nice on those rocks too!!
and they also do extremely well in that kind of bright, all-day sunlight...some of mine got to be over a foot long! (i planted them in a different spot than previously)

there are two types of vinca. the vining type (aka periwinkle) is perennial. the other type is an annual flower. even tho it's WAY below freezing, my vinca is still green...you can see it poking up through the snow. don't know why the mailman didn't see it when he walked right through the bed today altho it would probably be okay now (and would root okay), i'd like to wait until it's warmer so that i can send you some that already has roots.

That donkey tail spurge is a really cool plant. Another one I had last year planted into a pile of rocks is creeping wire vine. I LOVE it. It isn't invasive, but grows like crazy and is a little different than the sedums. Another idea would be some hens and chicks. I had some that hung over a foot off the edge of a big pot, it was really cool. There is a picture of the wire vine on my post "my pictures from last summer", if you want to check it out.

Someone mentioned whether Ice plant grows well in extreme heat; I had Ice plant in a border in the desert in CA, and it grew all over the place there in landscaping. Diane, I sent you a PM; since you have this topic gong here, now, it may not still be applicable.

Yes! I could only see three; the big one and the two on the bridge, but now I see the one up there in front of the lizard! He's almost the same color as the lizard, and while I was admiring the him I didn't even notice Willy!! The whole thing is such a pretty place.
