Hi Hi,
Great job of being bold and picking up a brush Rita! You should be proud, you too Ang!
As always, I rather it be rainbows and monkeys -- but that's not how art goes... I know I know.

Have you ever seen the movie Six Degrees of Separation. It has Will Smith as a Rennaisance Con Man. It came out in 1993 and it is an odd flick... I really like it.
Anyway, there is a lot discussion of Art in the movie. I love art talk.

Donald Sutherland is rich man being conned and he says this --
When his kids were little all the art they brought home from school was just kid's stuff. Paper after paper crinkled by the layers of tempera paint. But, in third grade it was different. The kids created great works of art with lovely worlds of color and texture.

Then in fourth grade it was as if all the lessons were lost. The papers drenched in tempera paints appeared again. So he went back to the third grade teacher and asked - How did she do it? How had she inspired the kids to paint such masterpieces?

Her reply was simple -- "Oh, I don't tell them how to paint, but rather I just know when to take it from them them."

So Rita, that's where you are. The kids didn't have to know when they were done. You will have to say it's done -- I let this moment, this piece of art go. It is what it is.

...and then go paint a few rainbows and monkeys grinnnn grinnnn

Good luck

I am not fond of movements. I like the historic movements because art reflects society. So, I can learn a lot about a time - just looking at the art it produced.

I detest modern art theories. I argued all through the class kicking and screaming. It's total crap! but I am sure all the young art minds in college are changing it as we speak.

So, mostly I don't care a hoot about art movements. But, I love to think about the creative people. What a gift!

But, I do think that all things are learned and then practised. I love school of any kind.
Great painters always learn from each other.

Mary Cassatt definetely learned her craft and was greatly influenced by those europeans she hung out with. She did the sponge thing -- watching, listening, painting and learning... Then she created her most amazing works. No doubt, she made things her own.

Art is purposeful! If you don't need seek to express something, if you don't have an intention, then it's not art.

Rita, you seek to express something in your picture... that makes it art.

I do think though it is fair of you to want to know or learn to paint a proper mountain.

If you wanted to learn pottery you would concentrate on learning techniques and I don't see how this is different.

Much love and respect to all you talented folks!

Rita,
Don't get me in trouble here. WHy in the world would you be disappointed - you're painting!!

Chennno inspired paint and I bet you watched her here while you were there.

You should be thrilled with your piece. There is no way I could do it (and I have been in a couple few friends art studios)

As I said in my long winded story. You will have to decide when you are done and there is the next piece and new decisions and the next piece and ... But, it's all learning, changing and evolving.

I just mean you can't learn anything new in a vacuum. Advice, classes they are good things. Especially, now that we are old and wise enough to filter the hard core crap out.

And by the way, angie could hold my hand all day long and I could not have painted your picture.

ohhhhh... Angie would let me know I was done alright!

Rita, I love this effect!! Whether it was the one you entended or not, I like the effect I perceive in my mind. I enjoy the painting very much....besides the eyes in the sky. I love your combination of colors; I enjoy the excitement of the lightning! I like the tree now that it has appeared, you captured the shape of branches, and shape of the trunk (not just a straight up/down stick); especially like the roots!!! They look like they are tenatiously hanging onto the earth..grasping!!
In fact I love it's barrenness...wouldn't want it to become too 'cluttered' with things.
Rita, is this the first time you have painted?! I can definitely see the influence of Angie. Please, give us something else!!

Ah..but being around YOU, your THINGS, your PAINTINGS, your PERSONALITY....I think this could contribute to 'influence' and 'inspiration'...I think it would me.

But never-the-less, it came from Rita's mind and heart. Can't wait for the next picture kissies

Hi all wavey
Shirley I understand you exactly. We older chicks see things a little differently. smile

Rita, Angie didn't need to pick up a brush You silly! - It's way more organic than that

Look at like this -- Angie's work is clearly influenced by Picasso and she sure didn't watch him paint!
Influences are good and important. And chosing good influences is essential.

The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape...
