Vinegar=Herbicide!
White or apple cider, This will work IF... applied to the weeds when they first emerge. Store-bought vinegar, which contains only 5 percent vinegar or acetic acid, isn't strong enough to deal with persistent problem weeds; However, you can now buy vinegar that is especially developed for use as an herbicide, and it contains 20 percent acetic acid, four times stronger than the kitchen variety. Garden vinegar does a much better job of eliminating tough, nasty weeds.Vinegar IS non-selective and as with ANY herbicide, take the precaution of spraying when there is no wind,A friend suggested his idea of putting a styrofoam cup over the spray nozzle of a regular ol spray bottle for a up close and personal applicator... AND vinegar will affect your soils PH, so use it as a SPOT treatment

You've caught my attention with the vinegar. Do you know where the strong stuff can be purchased? I have been searching for a natural way to kill weeds and grass that is popping up in the mulch in my communities playground(it makes it look messy). I didn't want to use chemicals cause of the kiddies playing there. The company that installed it didnt lay any barriers down and now I'm stuck with the headache of killing this stuff and not killing the kids(hard to do on some days laugh ) I sure would appreciate any info you could give me to solve my dilemma(and earn brownie points with my boss! grinnnn

Weezie, sounds like your vinegar could take the Hair off Ya Head! I'd give it a try thumbup
Karen thanx for having the desire to take care of the problem without harsh chemicals, thumbup 20% Vinegar can be found at organic garden shops and feed stores. It also helps if you give it a little something to make it "stick-to" so to a gallon of vinegar, mix a tablespoon of liquid dish soap or a tablespoon of molasses as wetting agents. Apply full strength from a hand sprayer. Be careful not to get any spray on you or in your eyes or inhale it. The smell <img border="0" alt="[perplexed]" title="" src="graemlins/confused.gif" /> will go away in 15 minutes, or so! laugh

All this apple cider vinegar stuff reminds me of a time about 15 years ago when my late husband (a pumpkin/watermelon man) got into making apple cider...then, letting it "get hard" as he would call it. That went O.K. for a while, then he decided to set up a STILL! He bought pick-up truck loads of apples, put them in old whiskey barrels in the barn, started adding sugar...
We had quite a production going! This 80 year old guy came one day and helped him set up the still. Looked like something out of the Beverly Hillbillies! The copper pipe coiled up, the whole nine yards! Man, I bet THAT stuff would have killed some weeds!!!

Not that I know Anything about stills, lala lala but in the condensor coil(copper coil)if you install a "Thumper Keg" it collects the "bad" stuff called Fusel Oil, which if you take it and apply it to weeds...they DIE
Gotta watch them ... Hillbilly Chemists! laugh laugh

Yep...I remember that "thumper keg"!

Believe it or not, I still have some of that "Apple Jack" in 1/2 gallon jars in the pantry!
Aged 15 years...reckon it's still good?
Might end up being a better pain-killer than what the doctor prescribed! laugh

Sounds like Phil had a still at one time, too!

H2O2....Well if you wanna go buy 35%, but really you should use plain ol' brown bottle 3%. If you spill 35% H2O2 on your skin, rinse immediately with warm water. House & garden plants: 1oz 3% H2O2 in 1qt of water (or add 16 drops 35% to ... Water or mist plants with solution, lawns, same mix, just drench. Sprouting seeds: add 1oz 3% H2O2 to 1pt of water,(Distilled water is best.)If You have the 35% already:Making 3% solution from 35% Dilution: ratio is 12:1. Again..Be careful....wear gloves and safety glasses, or stick to the 3%
Weezie, Ummmm, are these the same seeds mentioned before?? If so... Weezie, I have a real Badddddd feelin about em! laugh

Welllllllllll Phil,
GOD knows I am an eternal optimist,
Guess what????
The Jalapeno pepper seeds I planted that Thursday
before the Friday I was flat out on my back~sick and the greenhouse was 110*'s, I now have, drum role...........................................
14 plants... out of the I think 16 (or maybe 18) peatpot container thingie I used..
I just had another one pop out of the dirt, maybe 4 days ago!!! Go figure! That was Easter vacation when I planted them, how many weeks is that...?
GOD just loves to intrigue me!!! thumbup angell
(However HE does say that not all things work,
like I'd like them to, Gotta take the good with the bad, BUT NOT ONE OF THOSE TOMATOES SPROUTED).

But the one's I was really wondering about where my green beans, I am still waiting for those....

I'm wondering if they like it cool to sprout??

But I may just try that with in this week...
And just see what happens, Hey, ya never know!

But Thanks for the mixing ratio!!!

Weezie

I'll try to keep you posted, if I forget,

Beans need a minimum soil temp of 50 degrees before they will sprout, the thing to worry about is they rot so easily. Hey, optimism is Cool! And Ya just never know, sometimes the seeds we save do not germinate, due to many factors, maturity of the seed when harvested, storage, length of storage, and of course just plain ol rotten Luck!

I'll have to poke my finger in one cell and see
what it's doing!
When you said too wet, I began to wonder if it needed to breathe...
Maybe I'll check 'em first, if they still look firm, I"ll do the peroxide.
Always experimenting.

I still can't believe that about the pepper seeds. Especially when I complain about having 6 plants is MOOOOOOOOOOOOORE than I need and send them to the neighbors to pickel and relish...
But 14 Jalapeno plants shk mad OMG!
Plus I have some Cayenne one's I bought for him too, can't remember the head count on those sprouted one's...

Phil,
I am ashamed to admitt it, shocked
but I only use them fresh for salsa...
I don't cook the recipe, only fresh..

I do have to find something to do with them though.

Have no fear though, the mom down the street takes them and she does everything under the sun to them and the whole family eats them, even the 7 year old. He says he loveeeees them!! shk
So, I asked her already if she wanted some plants, and I will keep maybe 3 plants for myself.
She'll put them to good use!

And the other reason I'm growing them is my oldest son's enthusiasm for growing colorful peppers, ( I did purchase 1 of each 4 pks of Orange and Yellow pepper's and 1 of each of 3pks of Red and Purple Sweet peppers)

So, I got a bunch of railing planters boxes for him, 2 are up on his porch and I will put a handfull some where's else this summer and let him grow them and keep his joy of gardening going, he's not much for doing all that stuff in the garden, but if I can get him to do those peppers and some marigolds and argeratiums,
I am game to keep him interested!
I saved some seeds of his from a couple of marigolds, *If I could just find the package*
he grew on the porch last year!!!

Weezie

Anyways, I am going to try that perioxde stuff.
Can't hurt!

Thanks for the mixing instructions. Now if I can figure out what a ounce is. (kidding, I have a pool so I know weights and measures, I think anyway. he he)

Going to give this a try.

Yesterday, we had the whole day with bright sunshine. The first we have seen in a long time. My butterfly bush perked up and started to look great, then in came a storm, dropping a tree 10 feet from our pool (Whewwwwwwwww to close for comfort on that one) and my butterfly bush is sagging once again. This morning bright sunshiney day again with storms expected in the evening. When will this end. Someone forgot to tell mother nature this is MAY, April was show month this is flower month!

Weezie,
I know you said you only do "fresh" peppers...consider this. We have one whole bed of assorted peppers and it doesn't take much for us, so last year we started making pepper sauce, Jalepeno' jelly, salsa and relish. Then, at Christmas I put one of each in a "cheap" little basket and that is what our family gets for Christmas! It is so much better than anything store bought.

I want you to understand,
NO QUESTION IS EVER CONSIDERED A PAIN IN THE YOU KNOW WHAT!!!

How else do we learn?????
And future gardener's that come acrossed this thread may want to know the answer but maybe feel at this time, they'd like to just read the information instead of joining *for many reason's of their own*
But they can then get ALL the info they need and feel confident in their growing abilities and knowledge to conquer that problem and go on to other things in the garden!!!
*does that make sense*

So, just keep on asking!
No question is ever considered mundain,
we might be fast with an answer, we might be sometimes slow, but we always try to answer to the fullest! thumbup muggs

This should allow you to visit my plant album where I have one posted. My Butterfly Bush, who keeps looking sadder every day. It stopped growing, after the first week of rain. We have just had our first three days of sun, but it is not perking up. Any suggestions? My pumpkins are water logged still, but hopeful. You can see in the picture the bottom part of the plant is dying off.

Feel free to look around at my parrots, birds and wild life pictures too frown .

Miki,
Have you given your Butterfly Bush and "JUICE"?
Like a 10~60~10 (*or something like that)
The middle number is good for flowers and rooting.

The plant itself is not deep at all. The soil goes about 1/2 inches up the stem, which is how it was in the pot it came in. I am still thinking to much rain, but even though we have now had 4 or 5 rain free days, it keeps dying. I don't know if I should buy another plant at $10 a pop or just wait more. I purchased this one at a greenhouse, 3 colors to one pot. Two of the colors died off, one is left. Won't know which color until it flowers. At the rate it is dying off at, it won't flower.

Best growth occurs in well-drained, fertile soils in full sun, although they also grow in the worst soil. They will even tolerate light shade..But..Miki, the first thing that struck me when your pic came up was that Butterfly bushes are very Drought tolerant, You are having a "moisture" problem...and You have the plant..Mulched. I would pull back the mulch around this plant ant let it dry out, use the peroxide about once a week and Wait! Hope this helps wavey

The butterfly bush, (which I should be posting about in the flower section) is doing or seems to be doing better today. It has not gown in size, but it has not died any more. It has started to show signs of floral growth. This is good Yes?

Pumpkins still very yellowish, and water logged, though they were drying out nice until it rained today. One plant out of the six we put out, is dying, but not yet a lost cause. We just need to dry out. Question son wanted me to ask. The roots are exposed a tad on that pumpkin that is dying, should he dig some dirt and put it on top to cover the root? The rain is washing the top layers of the earth away. Suggestions for the pumpkin?
