Dear Marion,

I have been visiting your site with great interest for a while now -- thank goodness for your sensible advice for gardening in northern parts -- I am in the north of Scotland and have many of the meteorological challenges that you face, wind, rain, cold, etc. (but no bears)!

Your list of 163 materials for the compost bin is really useful but perhaps I can add another -- a British organic gardening writer, Bob Flowerdew, swears by peeing on his compost saying that urine acts as an accelerator. Actually he refers to it rather delicately as 'recycling his cider and beer.' This isn't so easy for us women but I do encourage my husband to provide the goods! One for the list?

Many thanks for all your ideas and beautiful photographs,
--Jean Bell

Great list! Didn't think about ivory soap! Depending on how organic you want to be, some of these things might or might not be included in your pile. wink

Some stuff to add:

coffee filters
cereal
crackers
fruit juice
tea
sugar candy
flat soda
dry dog food

Sorry, I got a kick out of this one!!! laugh
My experience: At the moment I am using a slow method of composting but I found that placing a few layers of cardboard under the whole compost pile that the worms will eat it to nothing after about a year. thumbup

Duckie you're too much! But that's cool, actually - do you think your survivors will honor your request? I think my partner would flip out if I even suggested it - besides, who's gonna compost around here once I'm gone? laugh Geesh, cheery thoughts eh?!

Don't buy anything for your compost heap - that's the beauty of composting. I about make it a game to see 'what I can feed the compost heap today'. I've never bought anything for it and I guaranty you can find plenty of stuff around your house and yard to feed it wink Every time you take a trip to the trash can, think 'can I compost this'? If you're not sure, check it out. That's how I got started. You'll be surprised what all you can compost!

I was wondering -- we burn our leaves (lots of magnolia leaves), branches, etc here. Can I put that in the compost pile? Would that be to acidic or will there be problems with my plants if I do that? The remaining ashes look really good, I hate to waste anything good if i can use it in gardens.
