I have had these water hyacinths for about a month now, and they are just going from bad to worse. Not growing, and just turning yellow and brown. ters I did have one flower the other day - YEA!!! but they are rapidly going downhill. eek

I have read that they don't like to be splashed on, and since they're in a small bathtub pond with a fountain in the middle, splashing is unavoidable. Are they doomed forever? Can you recommend another plant (will be annual here) that will give cover for the fish and flourish with the splashes?

Thanks!

Lynn,
My guess is it is the splashing. Can you take them out and put them in a tub for awhile? Add a little miracle grow to the water? They may perk back up?? Duh

Ouch. Frogbit will do that too sometimes. Ultimately it will go from yellow to brown to soggy mush.

I second the idea of pulling it out and giving it a quiet tub to recover in. Later on, you can put it back in the pond, and use two suction cups and some clear airline tubing to corral it into the quietest space in the pond and it may do ok.

I have had good luck with parrots feather taking over areas of the surface. The roots live completely submerged, but the plant grows on the surface of the water.

You could also try a lilly pad of some sort, but most of those get quite large.

If it is not illegal in your state, water lettuce is a nice cover plant. Fish (if you have some) love it. I'm not sure how it likes splashing.

My experience with water lettuce is that it falls to mush also if the leaves stay wet from splashing.

Got a second batch of water lettuce about 3 weeks ago - Giraffe is right - the centers are still ok, but the outer leaves have all gone yellow and mushy.

Can't find any frogbit or duckweed around here, and the one store doesn't have any water hyacinths left - mine all disintegrated.

Ponding stores here are few and very far between.
Looks like I'll have to take a ride tomorrow to the one that's about a 1/2 hour away to see if they have anything left.

Looks sort of like the frogbit.

Lynne, have you tried lillies or parrots feather? They can handle the water turbulance a bit better.

Can you believe how they've multiplied???
Blows my mind!
(...what's LEFT of it!) laugh

I swear, the fish ate almost all of them the first week...then BAMMM! More and more everyday!

You rock, Donna!
Now I have enough to share with someone else!
