Ouch. Frogbit will do that too sometimes. Ultimately it will go from yellow to brown to soggy mush.
I second the idea of pulling it out and giving it a quiet tub to recover in. Later on, you can put it back in the pond, and use two suction cups and some clear airline tubing to corral it into the quietest space in the pond and it may do ok.
I have had good luck with parrots feather taking over areas of the surface. The roots live completely submerged, but the
plant grows on the surface of the water.
You could also try a lilly pad of some sort, but most of those get quite large.
