I was looking back over the garden log I tried to keep this year. It wasn't very useful. Is there a checklist/template for this kind of thing so I am less likely to forget to enter inportant information?

Because I forget new information almost as soon as I learn it unless I use it everyday I need something very detailed or I end up mis treating the plants.

I've never thought of using a Garden log/jounel and of course it is a good idea! Thanks for that! wink

I was looking on the internet and pre-made journels are The Garden Keeper ($34.95! eek ) and there were others on sale at Amazon.com.

I was thinking though that a loose leaf note book with a calendar would work. Much like a day planner only for gardening only. You could have sections for each bed or plot or indoor or outdoors. A section on plants success stories and another on failures. You could be as detailed as you wanted.

Maybe your local nursery or even the nursery at home depot or Walmart would have suggestions or even a product you could look at.

thanks fernie,

I didn't know they had books on the subject. I was just looking for a check list because I forget to put important information in the journal that I would like to have later. Like with the seedlings. I know most of them like to be keep moist while they are sprouting but I forget to write down their watering needs as mature plants. That's a big one. I have to go back and look up all that information.

The White Caladiums came in a plastic bag and the label got torn up getting the bulbs out so I didn't paste it in the log so now I'm missing all that information. I just can't think well enough to figure out stuff like this. I guess as I realize I am missing important information I can add it to a list I make myself. It just takes a little longer to do it that way.

Under the freebie forum, SN posted about a free workshop on outdoor decorating and container gardening at Home Depot tomorrow evening. YOU can still register and there are even free gifts, one of which is a garden journel!!!! Also a quick look on the web will give you tons of info about watering and stuff (this site even has some help) that you can print out and put into a notebook. Don't get me started, I am the queen of loose leaf notebook organization!!! LOL

wouldn't you want what year you planted it? Otherwise you have everything covered I would think.

I am the "Dim Bulb!!!!!" laugh I see you had the date. But if you had a failure but decided to grow again another time, you might want a space for retrys. Because you would definately want to keep your information right? Even if you never replanted a particular species, because it would keep you from being tempted to waste money on trying again?

That would be helpful wouldn't it? confused

I also added a line for the hardiness zone, and one for the pH on the same line as the soil requirements.

So far I have filled in two sheets and i'm rethinking my desire for a specimen type garden.

I have about 16 more plants in the "Currently Have" Section and I can't begin to guess how many in the "Wish List Section".

But at least I am busy. grinnnn

I'll be sending the camera tomorrow, it's all packed up.

Tammy...I think your journal is a great idea....I also have no room left in the ol' memory and am constantly making "to do" lists. Most journals that you buy are just books of blank sheets for you to fill out...so I think I am going to make my own jgardening journal.

I think that is exactly what I am going to do. Print out a sheets with the info you want on it, maybe use a little heavier paper than just plain ol' copy paper and put it in a note book! AND...also leave room to journal how the plant is doing, any problems etc....

So...do you have a printer? If not I would be more than happy to print out your sheets and send them to you. I get all my paper free (the one GOOD thing about hubby working at the paper mill)

So, let me know if you want me to do that and PM your address to me. I can use the list you posted here or if you want to make changes....Let me know!!!

Thank you Vanessa,

That is an extremely kind offer. I use the computer as my journal because it is so large I can't lose it. grinnnn

Thank you again for your offer. If the apartment were large enough for a bookcase I would definitely take you up on it. As it is I can't even get a printer because I would have to suspend it from the ceiling. I've already begun doing that with the plants.

I just realized I have a legal pad with pages of notes in it from here. I need to start typing some of this up so I can print it out!! I want or need it to be somewhat portable. Besides I am so anal, I keep 2 copies of everything. ONe on computer and one hard copy. That way I get to lose everything twice!! sca

shk That's what I would worry about Tammy...what if your computer crashes.. shk I never keep anything on the computer that I don't have "written" copies of...I never thought it would happen, but last time my puter went bonkers...I lost EVERYTHING!!! You would have it out working on it most of the time...or couldn't you stick it in the closet or under the bed? I would just hate for you to loose all of that valuable info after working so hard on it...think about and let me know...the offer still stands!

I guess the Marine Corps computerized me more than I knew. The backup is on disk. I have one of those storage beds and the drawers are full. And one 4 foot closet in the entire apartment. Well not including the broom closet and it is full too. I thought about doing the Ceiling shelf storage space but I think that is for people who display books, not people who read them. Believe it or not I have very few knic-knacs. Mostly my display items are like a fancy turkey tray and relish dish, wicker bread baskets when not in use and stuff like that. Even my cooking utensils are on a hanging rack in the kitchen because I only have two drawers in the entire room. And yup the coffee cups are on hooks and that's after I added two upper cabinets in the kitchen. The landlord says most people don't use that much space. I always disagree with him.

Fernie you are definitely right. Failures will be kept. And when I find out the likely culprit I will probably try again. And if a plant isn't to my liking I'll keep that information too. Also I want to try to remember which plants should be bought as seeds and which ones should be bought as starter plants. Biennials for instance now that is going to test my patience severly.

I was just thinking of a page per plant type of thing (front and back). In a big loose leaf notebook....it wouldn't take up a ton of room would it? But that may be me just being anal again...besides.....I am also the Queen of clutter!!!!

"Queen of clutter" I do understand.

And would you believe I used to move my clutter from one house to another and even from one country to another. I had every drawing I ever made, every story idea I ever wrote, Bad Poems written when I was a teenager, notebooks full of everything I wanted to learn/do in life. And journals about what I actually managed to do. 5 china barrels of arts and crafts stuff for one move. And that's when I said enough is enough. Now I am going the other way, very minimalistic. If it's not used often, ornamental as well as practical then it is gone. Having my income cut in half helped me with making the decision. Being that I am anal also and write bunches I can see a note book turning into an encyclopedia set in short order. My coin collection took up 12 book boxes the last time it was moved. Before the last move I sold them all. Again enough is enough.

Well I understand the extreme approach also (from one extreme to another) and that the less is more concept works. I have to limit myself or my house would need a mimi bull dozer for clean-up! shk

I know what I forgot. Absolutely must put on the plant profile page. Where I got the plant, cutting, seeds. So I can remember things like never to buy Wal-mart Garden seed packs again.

absolutely a good idea!!!! I added that to mine immediately. I bought a notebook, 5 dividers (not enough)and am already putting in my pages. I also left a space to staple on a lable or plant tag or seed packet if I have any. I just need to pick up some graph paper to make maps! smile

I see I am going to have to "build" calendar pages for things like fertilizer schedules. The tomato crisis definitely makes that necessary. But the log is starting to be really helpful and that is a good thing I need all the help I can get. Where is the helping hands greamlin? <img border="0" alt="[perplexed]" title="" src="graemlins/confused.gif" />

I have added a pest section to my log and what I am doing to rid myself of pests and if it works. I have so many little critters around here who suddenly think I have opened the finest rodent restaurant in the world. Chef Fernie, that's me. mad

The pests are going to have to wait for me. I'm still in the weeding section. I bought my bulbs long before the ground was ready and have been playing catch up every since. I have some hot pink little tiny things crawling all over the concrete. I'm thinking maybe aphids but they don't appear to have attacked anything yet.

...well other than me. Something definitely bit me yesterday. But I put some neosporin on it and it'll be fine by tonight.
