The plan has always been that Stephen and I would eventually move up to Alaska to live. He was born there and then moved to Pennsylvania when he was 10. His dad staked a plot of land a couple hours north west of Anchorage and our plan is to build a cabin on that land. Right now, it looks like we might be able to move as early as this summer...if Stephen can find a paying internship there. So, lately I've been looking through some plans for cabin and today I found "the one". We would change a couple of things, but I think this is what it would be like. Here is a link to the plans...

What do you think??

Thanks, I have a couple of plans on that site that I like, but that is my favorite. We would remove the wall between the formal living and sun rooms and make it one large room. The sun room part of the house would end up being somewhat of a sitting area. The covered porch in the back and the patio off of the master bedroom would be removed as well as the covered entry between the laundry area and the garage. Bedroom #4 would be a guest bedroom/ quilting room.

Great ideas! But, just out of curiosity, why would you remove the covered walkway? Duh

Here in the rainy northwest, I would kill to have one! laugh

Barley, the house we live in now is just over 750 sq. ft. We're planning on having a few kids running around and it would be nice if Stephen could run a business out of the house. I'd love to have a great quilting room with a frame in it so that I can make and sell quilts.

That sounds so neat! Have you started thinking about the fine details like building materials for the kitchen, floors, ect?

Do you make quilts now?

We've been fooling around with making our own house plans since before we got married, but I really like these plans. Well, the kitchen it laid out pretty much the way we like it....except the island is a little weird. I don't know if I like the seating in it where it is. I think I'd be more apt to making the island a little smaller and then making it like a T with the seating on the breakfast room side facing the kitchen. The counters would ideally be marble, but I don't know if we could afford that at first, we may have to wait to get that. Wood floors would be nice, and easy since we will be milling the land for the materials for the house.

Wow, it looks amazing!
My, you are brave to move so far away from everything you know. --Unless you have family there?
I always wanted to see Alaska, but could never live there.

We went to Alaska for our honeymoon. I loved it. Sure, winter is cold, but so is it here. Its up dry cold up there and a damp one here, so I think I'll be able to handle it. There isn't any family up there, but my side of the family isn't particularly close. I have a brother that I haven't seen in over 7 years, we have no clue where he is. My other brother lives in Florida, so we don't see him much, he youngest kid is 3 now and I've never even met her! I'm close to my one sister, but not the other, we see eachother for Christmas and every once in a while during the year. Stephen's mom and dad still have their house in Anchorage, but are renting it out right now. When his dad retires, they are planning on moving back up there, so they will be up there. There are some family friends up there, but that's pretty much it. Its soo gorgeous up there...mountains, the inlet...there are whales there sometimes, goats jumping around on cliffs, glaciers to hike on, iceburgs....so much. luv

I'm planning on it. Its so hard for me to stay calm about it because the time of moving is potentially close, yet it depends on certain things happening. If things happen right, it will be this summer, if not, we may have to wait until next year. Not that that would be a bad thing. We get stocks in the company and that is what we are planning on living on when we move up there. If we stay another year here in Pa, then we'll have more stocks to sell and stuff.

There are some pictures of Alaska in my webshots album if you want to see some. I took them in 2002 when we went there for our honeymoon. I LOVE the glacier photos because it was so fun to hike on it!
