UPDATE!!!

Do you remember that stratching sound that I made Stephen go check out?? Well lastnight I was in the kitchen and I heard leaves rustling on the back porch (its covered with leaves right now). I turned off the kitchen light and looked through the window but didn't see anything...but kept hearing the leaves. So I get right up against the window of the door and look straight down. Low and behold!!! There was a white head digging through my trash bag that I had thrown out there the night before. I couldn't quite make out what it was until it shifted a bit. It was an opossum!! I've never seen one so close before! So now I know what has been eating Puss-wah's food!! It was a younger one, because we opened the back door up really slowly so that we could shoot it with the BB gun and it just looked at us....didn't even run! It started to run when I opened the screen door....I shot...not really sure if I hit it or not...maybe in the rear. It jumped off of the deck, didn't move, then I could hear it running through the leaves. So....that was the mysterious scratching sound!

Oh, you guys! laugh

Up here we can have trouble with bears and occasionally moose that come out of the woods.

A few years back, a fellow heard a thunking kind of noise on his darkened back porch. Glancing through the screen door, he thought it was a giant dog of some sort and picked up the rolled newspapser on the kitchen table, opened the door, and whacked it on the nose. It was a bear.

That door got slammed shut pretty quick. laugh

The wildlife people came and posted catch-the-bear-safely traps throughout the neighborhood to haul it back into the deepest woods. Don't wanna be leaving uncovered trash around to attract hungry critters unless you want to be feeding them up close and personal all winter! thumbup

We usually just tie the bags up and put them on the back porch until the morning that the trash gets picked up. We have a barrel, but when the trash guys empty it, they just throw it back onto the curb. Lately its been windy here so I get home in the afternoon and my barrel is rolling back and forth in the middle of the street. But now I guess we have no choice but to use the barrel again.

My wild pets here don't bother the trash because they have their own bowls of goodies around the yard!
The skunks LOVE Cat Chow and raw chicken.

Oh Mel, do you remember about 7 years ago when the ostrich got loose in Maine and EVERYBODY was looking for it for the longest time?!

Those things are usually between 6 and 7 feet tall and I could just picture some wilderness man coming home exclaiming "Hey Ma! Looky here at the wierd turkey I shot!" laugh laugh

Fortunately, the thing was found safe and sound and didn't end up in anyone's stew pot.

One thing I know about possum's, they are creatures of habit. My mother lives in the city and has a bad habit of puting the garbage on the back porch, usully cuz its to late to walk it to the alley or whatever. when I was living with her my bedroom would face the alley and backyard. Every night like clockwork this possum would walk the same path to get to the garbage. never did I see him (or her) travel any other way. Even if you stop putting your garbage where its accessible to them it will take several days for them to get that its not there anymore!!
Strange creatures. I bet alot of wild animals are like that.

Yeah...it was here again lastnight...and of course, without thinking. I threw a bag full of old salad out there lastnight. DUH!! I looked for it about the same time I had seen it before, but it wasn't there.....but this morning when I went to the kitchen to get tuna for the cats (their dry food is all gone this morning) I looked out and sure enough there was chopped up lettuce scattered on the deck. I suppose I need to look out a couple of times each night.

I just wasn't thinking about what I was doing. I cleaned out the refrigerator lastnight and didn't feel like walking to the barrel. Its not like we live in a dangerous area, I just didn't feel like putting shoes on and going outside into the cold! smile

laugh laugh That's funny!!! Where I live, we have city trash pickup twice a week. When we lived in the city (I'm in the suburbs now) we had a guy come to pick it up...he had his own business with real trash trucks. But there are beat up pick-up trucks that collect trash too. The city is trying to get city trash pick-up...which alot of people are tighting tooth and nail because it will close alot of little businesses down.
