According to folklore, October's full moon is called the "Hunter's Moon" or sometimes the "Blood Moon." It gets its name from hunters who tracked and killed their prey by autumn moonlight, stockpiling food for the winter ahead. You can picture them: silent figures padding through the forest, the moon overhead, pale as a corpse, its cold light betraying the creatures of the wood. The Blood Moon rises this year on Wednesday, Oct. 27th. At first it will seem pale and cold, as usual. And then ... blood red. It's a lunar eclipse. Beginning at 9:14 p.m. EDT (6:14 p.m. PDT), the moon will glide through Earth's shadow for more than three hours. Observers on every continent (map) except Australia can see the event: The pale-white moon will turn pumpkin orange as it plunges into shadow, becoming eerie red during totality. What makes the eclipsed moon turn red? The answer lies inside Earth's shadow: Our planet casts a long shadow. It starts on the ground--Step outside at night. You're in Earth's shadow. Think about it!--and it stretches almost a million miles into space, far enough to reach the moon. Suppose you had a personal spaceship. Here's your mission: Tonight, at midnight, blast off and fly down the middle of Earth's shadow. Keep going until you're about 200,000 miles above Earth, almost to the moon. Now turn around and look down. The view from your cockpit window is Earth's nightside, the dark half of our planet opposite the sun. But it's not completely dark! All around Earth's limb, the atmosphere glows red. What you're seeing is every sunrise and sunset on Earth--all at once. This ring of light shines into Earth's shadow, breaking the utter darkness you might expect to find there. Turn off the cockpit lights. There's a lovely red glow. That same red light plays across the moon when it's inside Earth's shadow. The exact color depends on what's floating around in Earth's atmosphere. Following a volcanic eruption, for instance, dust and ash can turn global sunsets vivid red. The moon would glow vivid red, too. Lots of clouds, on the other hand, extinguish sunsets, leading to darker, dimmer eclipses. How will the moon look on Oct 27th? Corpse white. Pumpkin orange. Blood red. Maybe all three. Step outside and see for yourself. Warning: While you're staring at the sky, you might hear footsteps among the trees, the twang of a bow, a desperate scurry to shelter. That's just your imagination. Yeppers!! Me and the oldest just went out to take a peak at it!! When I first went out, the chunk missing *around the 7:00 number on a clock face was gone* And we just came back in from out there again, and now the section from 6:00 to almost 10:00 is gone. Looks so neat. Lot's of clouds... but does have some breaking holes in it... But no color yet!!! Michelle, you rock!! Thanks for keeping Weezie

Yea, I was in the same boat loz.. I went out around 10:30pm, and there were so many clouds, I coudln't see any stars, or the moon anywhere. I could almost see the moon this morning at 4:30am when I got up, but there were still a LOT of clouds.
Neat pics!! Meg

G-Mom ~ I definitely think the animals were tuned into what was happening last night - at least at my house! The two older cats - sisters - were at the window almost all night staring out, and Amber was making loud guttural sounds unlike anything she's done before. The pictures here are great - thanks for sharing! We were only able to see clearly from the beginning til it was just about covered over. After that was solid clouds - too bad... :p

When I was an animal control officer years ago, every time we had a full moon we'd get TONS of calls about dog bites, and also about PEOPLE fighting over something involving a dog. Seems like ALL animals are affected by the moon! For the record, Freckles didn't bite me last night! Been two nights in a row now! Cindy

Yes I had a great veiw out here in the booneys.turned security light off.sat in chair beside 40 ft flowerbed till was up over the pines then was able to watch on the front porch.Enjoyed 4 bud lights.went in for the 5th one and the dam dogs got gate open and took off...so YES>IT EFFECTEDTHEM& ME>>..................EXERCISE!.I tried chaseing 3 dogs who tottally ignored me 2 went one way the other a diffearent direction.Tried to catch the 2 but when they went in woods.I dead stopped.snakes...no way am going in there armed with just a flkashlight...getting dim.went back to house.drank 5th beer thenm took truck to find no luck...moved to hammock to watch eclipse.moon statring to show again now.hearing wolves howling& cyottee.so grab flashlight again.here the 2 in woods.walk back to my road to call in direction of house.get them back in house.leave gate open go back to hammock. The lil B finally comes pranceing in yard.i was eatng popcorn by then& did not share with NO DOGS.dogs were bad.Eclipse was great.I walked over to lake to see moonrise.was a creamy orange.I couldn't get hold of my neighbor forhis telescope cause he wasn't fishing with hubby.they decided to go Baytown.was funny they pull up and are like"whats wrong with the moon?" MEN,they never listen to us.been telling him eclipse was comeing up for a whole week, then had to explain the eclipse to him...not sure he enjoyed seeing it laid out with my hanging baskets though, but he got the point that 2nd time with them.
Nice pics.will have to have my mom see them.she didn't see it. I poll it affects animals.I got the exercise to prove it.
