This has been the worst year that we have ever had for a growing season for vegetables, the harvests are poor.

Because of this~potatoe prices have gone out of hand, I went to the store yesterday to buy a 10 pound bag of potatoes (usually $3) and was shocked to see the price of $10 on the bags.

Mistake I'm thinking,....nope. potatoes here right now are $1 a pound. shock So I left them there. Next year I think I'll put in a crop of them if this keeps up. I was told that fresh veggies this year would be triple the price of last year.

OMG, Tamara, my neighbor has been giving me potatoes every weekend and we can barely eat them all. Maybe I should be shipping them to you instead! It'd probably cost the same to overnight them to canada! lol

Tamara are you serious?!!! They were 40 cents a pound last week on sale, I'm assuming that the prices are going to rise all across Canada?

I was at the grocery store today, and a 10 pound bag of Russets (my fave) was $3.49.
Usually it's $2.99.

Well, the prices are rising in everything, it's now $4 for a 3 pound bag of yellow onions and $3 for a head of regular lettuce.

Hoping I can get better prices at the farmers market when it opens in two weeks.

Tamara, sorry to hear of the high price of your Russets. Mine are not quite that bad yet. I only buy taters on sale--this week I bought 5 # of Klondike rose for 3.00.
They are usually 3.49 around here.--

Sarah, if your neighbor is giving you home grown potatoes, and you would like to keep them for future use you can cook, mash and freeze the excess potatoes. Mash them as you would normally just leaving out the salt. Add that when you warm them this winter. My DH did that when he was single,-(many years ago)- & it worked well.

On a gardening show the other day, I saw a way to "container garden" potatoes.
I believe I am going to do mine this way next year.

You get a half bushel basket, & cut out the bottom. Place it on the top of your garden area where you want the potatoes to grow. fill the basket half full of a mixture of topsoil and compost. lay 2 or 3 seed potatoes of your choice on top.--it is recommended they each have 3 eyes, to assure a greater crop yeild-- now cover to the top of the basket with more of your soil mix.

care for as you would any other container plant. When it is time to harvest, tip to the side & harvet your crop.--no digging required. thumbup

We are thinking of plowing and planting a half acre of potatoes next spring.

If you don't have a barrel you can use old car tires as well. We did that a couple years ago, just go and knock off a tire and have enough potatoes for 2 meals, but the ants got after almost all of them. Hate these blasted Texas ants!!
