Yesterday a co-worker gave me a purple Angel trumpet I know also as a double petaled datura( Blooms are upward) When I recieved the plant it was in a gallon pot and it was very dry and the leaves were just limp BUT there was a bloom bud that looked like it should be about to open.. ( for a time line keep in mind I got home from work with it about 4 P.M. I watered it throughly and because it was sooo dry the water ran out several times before it held the last watering with a drop of super thrive in it.
After a couple of hours the leaves started perking back up and reaching for the sky ( almost dark thirty by now)and the bloom bud had also perked back up thanking me for the drink! I noticed the end of the bloom had started to open
I watched it up until around 10 and took pictures ( many of them to record the bloom opening! these pictures are at about 40 minutes intervals.
I really think moon flowers/ datura's open soo elegantly... I just love them white ones, purple ones doesn't matter!!
the next two pictures are as it is unfurling to open up...

I also have seeds coming up I recieved from Lynne that are about 6-8 inches up with about 7- big healthy leaves on them,, How exciting to see what the results of the seeds will be!!

Pretty! Didnt someone just post a pic of one somewhere?? besides here I mean. Was it Kratz??? There are some plants in the perrenial border here that I think may be datura. I'll have to wait and see. Do I have to wait for the seed pods to dry up and fall off before i can harvest them???
VERY nice, Diane! That looks a lot like the one I grew, but I think mine was a double flower if I'm not mistaken. Hopefully you'll see for yourself sometime soon!
Wrennie - the seed pods need to dry up completely before you harvest the seeds. BUT... they often crack open before they are totally ripened, so many people put a piece of pantyhose tied around the pod, to catch the seeds so they don't fall out before you can get to them. I did this and it worked well. I only had a few flowers on mine the one year, so I only got a few seeds anyway... but at least I got those.
I get that, but you only need a piece small enough to wrap around the pod - it's really not that noticeable. Oh, and the pods are VERY prickly when hard and dry - be very careful with them!
Wrennie When The pods are firm I just cut them off when they are still green( promotes More Blooms) and lay them out to dry and they turn brown eventually they crack open on their own, I take tweezers and get the seeds on out,, Last year on the white daturas, I cut off the pods and just put them on the soils under the main plant when they cracked opened I harvested the seeds out of all but one ~ That one I just picked it up and sprinkled the seeds around that area and put approx two inches of top soil on them and this year I have loads of babies!~ So next year I will have a very thick area of many moon flower bushes!!

I want seeds too.My white just started takeing off.I'm going to try watering it more so maybe it will catch up.That one would match my new bed I'm planning.purples pinks reds.
I will age ungracefully until I become an old woman in a small garden..doing whatever the Hell I want!
The flowers will go to seed (pods) then I will let them dry, this plant is truly fascinating......
I also have a ton of white datura.....the seed pods get to look like spikey green balls....be careful if you have these as they can be dangerous to your fingers.....Prickly
I got one (pricker) under my fingernail last year and hubby had to dig it out, after I cut my fingernail first.
yes...purple dauntra AND hosta. That'd be great.I've came across your address today more than once!I'm looking for a plant diagram. My white dauntra is still growing.I've not peeked back amoung the 4 pms to see since moved container if any yellow dautra showing life.

I don't have an answer for you, but I can't wait to see how the other ones open! By the way... is that one of the plants that you got this summer? It couldn't be from the seeds I sent, right? Did they even grow for you?
WOW Diane - that's fantastic!!! You must have the magic touch! That, and some excellent soil, but I'm sure it's your tending it that made it want to shine for you!

Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain!! .....
This is an update on the seeds Lynne sent me ,, as posted above the seeds had grown and a bud was developing,,,
Here is it blooming and Yep Lynne you were right! It is double petaled ; I think these are sooooo cool Like a flower blooming into or out of another flower,,,
and look it hasn't grown tall at all I doubt that it is even over 12-14 inches tall and blooming already!,,,, Another reason I turn Compost and Sheep manure into my soil ,, I have had the best results with that combination,,

Diane - that is so exciting!!! What a very pretty flower you have there - I'm telling you, you have the midas touch! It IS interesting that the plant isn't all that tall and bloomed for you already - it took mine 3 years to get just a few blooms!
