and I'm hoping to kep it alive I don't like the idea of keeping any animal in a cage or bowl, but I couldn't resist this betta, nice red colour, and quite lively!

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee
Don't worry you picked a very easy fish to care for.I my self have 6 right now. They like small non filtered water an air stone is fine but were the are from they don't live in large spaces. They are use to living in shallow rice pattys. And be careful they can drown if you fill the bowl to high. They can breath air and need to suface to get oxegen. If you stick with bottled water I use spring water from the store 1gallon should last a month. You should have your fish for at least 2 yrs.And there alot of colors to find I have a pink,a dark blue one with white tipped fins and and a really nice purple one.Good luck.If you have more to ask let me know.I breed them and I have Bettas for 7yrs. now
Glad to know they are really that easy to deal with! I've read that they can jump out of their bowls, I've been keeping the lid on ever since! it didn't want to eat for the first three days, and I got worried, but it seems to be doing well and eating now. How do I know if its a male? It doesn't really flare up and the fish doesn't really change colours. I have a female I suppose? It's been alive for almost a week now and I'm having hope, after all it is an easy fish lol
littlelizard, any tips I should be aware of for success? The container is half filled, and I use regular tap water treated with some chemical to remove chlorine. Will it work if I just set some water up and wait for the chlorine to evapourate?

Your Betta should be a male most stores only carry males. But to be sure just look at his fins they should be long and flowing, females have very short fins almost none. And letting water sit will be fine.I can't do that here I have too much lime in my water and its very hard.If you run across a female don't put her with your male he will kill her.Only during mating season do they get along.Females get along well,I had 5 in my tank at once after they pick who is the boss of the group they leave each other alone.I hope this helps.
