Hi,

I just ran across an insect I have never seen before. I tried my best to get it's picture ( clearly) but I just could not, hopefully there is enough of an image that some one can help me out.

It is an off white and fuzzy, has fly like wings and a probe like a mosquito that is constantly extended. It is sitting in the top edge of my elephant ear in the picture.

Anyone?

I found the little bugger! It is called a Bee Fly. Here is a link to a much better picture than I took of it.

I was thinking of snake fly, which would have been wrong.

what are bee flies?

Quote
Bee-flies belong to the Order Diptera (True Flies),...The body is stout and furry, so that the fly has a strong superficial resemblance to a bumblebee, although the long, spindly legs are rather different from those of a bee. It has a long, rigid proboscis held out in front of the head, which is used to probe for nectar while the fly hovers at flowers (rather like a humming bird).

lol Wrennie, with that proboscis I said bee! I would not want the thing near me for fear of being poked by it.

Papito, thanks so much for gathering the information you did, it was very intersting. Picture number 4 is exactly what I had.

Thanks again

Shirl

Wow!! That is a fly? Hmm, I saw some of those earlier this spring and thought what a different kind of bee that was as I was running the other way. I am extremely allergic to bees and leave them to the garden when they are there. Guess I didn't need to waste my energy running from that lol. Thanks for the info!!
