somebody who knows anything about dahlias please help me!!! i have a dahlia plant that has suffered stem rot on 2 out of 4 stalks. i cut those 2 off that looked like brown mush. now the largest main stalk of that plant is feeling hollow near the top section. but the base of the stalk still feels fine and no part of the stalk is discolored yet. what causes this and most importantly, HOW CAN I SAVE MY PLANT???? how can i prevent this in the future?

Stem rot is usually caused by growing dahlias in heavy soil. The best way to prevent it is to plant them in well draining soil.

Thanks Alan, I appreciate the info. Actually, I know my soil is pretty heavy with clay so when I planted this May I did mix in some newly bought garden soil and even amended it with peat moss to lighten the soil. I guess I just have to figure a better way to improve the soil and make sure it is well draining.

Wow! I have never grown dahlias from seed and honestly wouldn't even know how or where to begin. So if I do end up having to go that route I would greatly appreciate your advice and guidance. Thanks a bunch Dodge!!

Dahlias are also easy to grow from cuttings.

Thanks Barb, I'll keep that in mind if I start losing more plants!

Hey Barb & Alan....I have a stupid dahlia question to ask. How do you guys WATER your dahlias exactly? Do you use a hose w/ attachment and water the soil around the plant near the roots or do you just turn on the sprinkler and let it water every part of the plant for an hour???

Also, can either of you verify if this is stem rot? And what's that disgusting white crud growing on the stem near the root?

Thanks for all the help...

Tracy

uhuhh uhuhh shock

Heavens no............Dahlias prefer not to have wet feet...
Mine are on a slight slope and the water runs off the feet.. Don't go hog wild with water on them......
That's a no no......I just use a watering can with a sprinkle on the end and water it about 20 seconds..
However , I have most of them under the lawn mat with white stones on top.. Clay soil is awful , but they grow great there. I cut holes in the mat to plant them and no weeding.

However I do have half a dozen in a regular flower bed this time, just open and I weed it ...............No big deal on watering them..
