We need help! We have a 15= year old clematis that get bushy but only bloom on top. Is there antying we can do to get it to bloom all the way up the plant? We cut it back to the ground every fall. We used to not cut it back at all. Now its bushier...but limited blooms...only on top. Greg

Greg: that is curious--I was just going to advise that you cut the plant down to the ground--that is what I used to do with mine---and when it came back in the spring, it would cascade down both sides of the trellis beautifully. greg: do you have a trellis for your clemantis?? you should train it up a trellis and or tie it up so that the ends will cascade down the side you want to "show"--and be sure not to let the 'arms"-(the proper teminology escapes me right now) get tangled onto one another. --I will be sure to check back with your thread. Good luck!!!

which variety is it?
not all need to be pruned and some need to be pruned at a specific time of year. also, if you disturb the roots they don't like that and will not perform (bloom-wise) as they would normally. disturbing the roots can cause no blooms for a year or two even.

Check what variety you have, there are many who will only bloom off the OLD wood. My MIL got into that problem, started cutting back her clematis, then would have no blooms or very few on the very top. Once we determined hers has to have the old wood to bloom, now this year she is just covered in blooms! Good Luck!!

I don't know what variety it is...It is trained up a trellis with its roots cool and shaded. We are going to try and leave the old wood on it and see what it does next spring. We have tried it both ways but we will try the old wood method again. It can't hurt. Greg

Hi.... Our clematis has yet to bloom...Should we did it up and plant a new one?? I thought the older a clematis got, the more it bloomed.. We cut it back to the ground this past fall. It got bushier but no blooms yet. We have also left the old wood on it and it was the same. HELP!!! We don't know our clematis type..it is 20+ years old. Greg

Would it be ok to buy a new one like Jackmanji and plant it next to the other?? We are looking for a hardy red clematis for zone 5a that blooms all the way down the vine. Greg

Fall is here and I have to remove four clematis vines from an old, worn out metal fence to put up a new one.
How careful should I be? I am getting very anxious...
It looks like people here aren't too worried about cutting them, but I am...
Mine are in big 7 gallon pots, so I plan to cut them away from the fence and move them on a dolly. Want to put them back after new wire is up.
Any advice? Tips? This is my first visit to this forum.
Oh... One is a Nelly Moser. One is a Henryii. One is Mme Bouchard (?) and one is a new sky blue hybrid that I don't have it's name. Thanks to all...

Cutting them now , wont hurt a bit. Some cut them to the ground yearly.. I have Moser and just let it be , no cutting to the ground.
You can put them back same way..

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE, DODGE... BUT... It's still very warm HERE and they are STILL growing... Shouldn't I wait til it gets chilly enough for them to go dormant? Can I REALLY, SAFELY just whack away at them? REALLY? STILL WORRIED.
