I used to know someone who had a tall vine that had flowers that looked like a closed bell with "edges" on the bells. At first the bells were greenish white, but turned white and inside a red bead becomes a red flower. Does anyone know what this is? It's bugging me, wondering what it is.

I don't have a digital camera, that's why all I can do is to describe the plant and flower. The white bell has a seam running down the four sides of the bell. Inside a red bead becomes a red flower, about the size of a pea. The white bell is about the size of a small marble. The bell is closed for awhile, and when it opens is the red bead, which opens to a red flower.

I have KILLED several. Your description was right on. I will keep trying to grow them until I get it right. They do well in our spring/ summer but it just gets too dry in our fall/wind season.

If they are perennials, The probably prefer cold weather..like my zone 5.. Some ladies tell me of the cold weather flowers not doing well in california.. I have many plants sent to me from there. b

They are tropical zone 10 and I'm a zone 9. They need heat and high humidity. I can give them heat but the humidity is a problem. But they can be decent houseplants.

Putting pans of water around the plant will bring up the Humidity.. House plants put humidity into the home thru the leaves.....YOu water them all and they react.....perhaps a bowl of water under you plant....I do that with my africian violets and they they love it.. Oh I put fish tank pebbles under the pot also......they are from the fish I killed..... b
