glad you got rid of the Japanese Beetle--but remember--where there is 1............

and on that note---if you find out what plants repel them, let me know--I am going to put in some blackberries next spring--and when i do, i am sure the J Beetles will come--I had a terrable time with them out at 'the farm". if I can do something to help my cause I am all over it. thumbup

I have a spray here that will kill them but I'd rather squish them or plant garlic (yummy by product that way!! )

Hi all, I just had to add that I "taught" my chickens, while they were very young to eat the Japs, and now I don't have a very bad issue with them,,,as long as the girls can "get" to where the little nasties are hangn' out. they were introduced, so most critters do not see them as a food item,,,until they are shown that they are a food stuff. My ducks are still trying to figure it out,,,they were scared of them at first,,LOL,,,but they are starting to catch on.

Great site!!!! Hope to see more of you all, around the boards, Heidicat

I'm so glad you started this thread! thumbup

Yesterday on my cigar plant - Cuphea ignea -
which I managed to overwinter without a single leaf on it, and it's now on my deck railing so the #$^% deer don't eat it down to the quick  everytime it grows back from their damage!!! It was getting so nice and full, and the hummingbirds were LOVING it! Anywho... it was COVERED with Japanese beetles!!!!!!! The leaves are already all getting lacey from their damage - I brushed my hand over the plant several times and could NOT believe how many beetles flew out from it! shock uhuhh

Diane had mentioned mixing Joy dishwashing soap with water and hot sauce and spraying it - anyone else ever done that?

Here are the somewhat healthy tips of the plant still...
[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

AND... the damage so far from the beetles!

Thanks Penny!

sooooooooo... this is WAR!
There were soooooooooo many of them out there just now. boohoo
I just mixed up Joy dishwasher soap, water, and WASABI powder! touched why
Hey - it was the closest I had to hot sauce in the house!!! idea

I sprayed it like crazy out on the deck on all my potted plants. thumbup
I just hope the hummers like their nectar on the spicey side! lol
They are the reason I am growing the cigar plant in the first place!

Barb: I used Sevin dust on my plants---but I must have waited too late (this was years ago) it is supposed to be good for J beetles, i know--but i had no luck---I do use it with success for other pests

I just came in , was checking the beetles on the zinnias.Dead all over the ground.....

They started on one of the pretty large bulbs so I gave that a shot.
I was making hanging type flower post, in my concrete urns .....I have silver falls, which is a crawler and falls it is really pretty. So I used it on the ends and put others in the middle.

Get them buggers before they get you.

Three years ago we were inundated with Japanese Beetles. They were on everything. My poor asparaghus bed was so heavy with them, the plants wouldn't stand up straight. We decided it was time to pull out the big guns.

Milky Spore. Its expensive, but it works. We spread it on our acre size lawn, and around each of the flower/veggie beds with a small spreader we purchased. After the first year, the numbers had decreased, but not a lot. Last year, we saw about 20 of them through July and August. This year, we've seen one and killed it by hand. I just did an "inspection" since I have a problem with a droopy plant, and couldn't find any JB's anywhere. We'd recommend Milky Spore to anyone whose Japanese Beetle problem is getting out of control.

I'm sorry. I should have said that the Milky Spore kills the grubs from which Japanese Beetles will appear. I can dig down in any spot in the yard now and not find a grub.

One question tho.

Does Milky spores effect the other plants or the soil ?
some things kill everyting else too.

I haven't seen another Jap. beetle in my yard since the first offender was here. Knock on wood. Phew. Big sigh of relief.

Dodge, as far as I can tell, nothing else was affected by the Milky Spore. If you follow the guidelines, though, they will tell you to make 2-3 applications of the stuff. These extra applications are not necessary. We've used it in two different locations now - one application covering the entire yard is all we've ever used. It takes about a year and a half to completely break the cycle of the beetles, but from what we can see, after two years, we are pretty much beetle free. Of course, we may end up with some flying in from neighboring properties, but those are easily controlled.

And by the way, I grew up in Allegheny National Forest in Western PA! Susan

Wrennie, if I find more than two, I just know it will be a bad summer!

Dodge, thanks, we like to think this is God's country up here. I know we're sparsely populated and I can't see the neighbors, so I'm happy!

As far as I know, and this is my own personal experience with Milky Spore, it didn't do harm to anything in or near the yard. I have lupines within inches of where we spread it, as well as day lilies. In fact, the lupines were probably jumping for joy that they don't have to put up with those pesky JBs anymore! Susan

Oh my! I'd have changed the schedule too! Our closest neighbor is a Vietnam vet, gold earring in right ear, lumberjack type who just loves the privacy, and who, every so often, walks over to watch me talk to the birds, chipmunks, and raccoons (which he finds amusing, I guess)! Teehee. Susan

I have them in mass eating my roses. I do the seven liquid and it keeps them down for a week or so. I am constantly at war with them.

why breakfast breakfast

That is what happens to mine also.. I use the powder Sevin and I hurry take photos of the roses before the beetles attack.. SOme one said pick the beetles off ...

Plant garlic beside them.

Another said put sugar water in to a hanging pop bottle to collect the beetles.

Make holes in each side and let them like a bird feeder and they go inside and drown.
