It's my first year growing peas, and most of the dozen plants I have are flowering, or already have pea pods... my question: How do I know when I can harvest my peas? i can't wait! lol grin

those are about 55 days for maturity...you need to allow the pods to dry on the vine before picking them. they should change color and dry up a bit. in other words, they shouldn't look so 'full' when they're ready to pick. the color should change slightly as well. number of peas per pod should be 4-6. maybe a few more if the pods are particularly long.

i never grew that variety. from what i understand, they're supposed to be better/have more flavor when they're raw. sounds like they'd be a nice addition to a salad! you'll have to let us know!!

I pick mine when they look plump, feel firm. Mine are flat right now and you can see the teeny peas through the skin when the sunlight is behind them. Once i pick them they dont usually have a chance to get in the house. I eat them right there in the garden. very sweet!

I pick mine as soon as there is something inside to eat. I hate when they get big and dry! What sometimes will fool you is when the pod gets all bloated and looks huge but inside the peas are small. For that you have to gently squeeze the pods to feel the peas. I don't know what makes them do that.

My pea plants have lots of pods but none are very plump yet :( Mine are 'Alaska' too. i am going to plant a fall crop too! Plant about 10 weeks before your first frost date, keep well watered in the summer heat. A little shade helps too.

Mine never make in the house-I eat them right off the vines.
I let mine get to the size of the frozen baby peas, and then I attack !

I've picked enough for several cupfulls. But the plants now seem to be affected by the 90+ weather we've been having. I've been watering just about daily. Does anyone know if heat affects the plants?

Nick, I think the heat has a big affect on the peas.. mine have slowed down, and have started to die back a bit now.. I only planted 12 or 13 plants, so this attempt was not bad for my first lol
As Wrennie said above, I'm planting a fall crop.. probably sometime in September..

I pick mine and eat them on my way in also! This year I tried a new variety which is perfect to container growing. The plants only get to be about 10 inches high. I pick them when they are still small, and they are great!
