I started growing my cucumbers on a trellis 2 summers ago. The plants stay so much healthier that way, and the cucumbers are nicer too. Here they are today - lots of bright yellow blooms on them - yea!

Thanks for sharing this Lynne, I've got some cucs growing in my greenhouse and I was wondering how I would handle the growth. I'll just get a trellis like yours or get my hubby to build me one. Great idea.

I grow them on a trellis too. To be more exact, I use a 'bean tower'. I have grown them successfully up sunflowers. They really like it. The only problem is that the sunflower leaves and cucumber leaves look so much alike it is hard to find the cucumbers to pick. Shade loving stuff can be grown in the shade at the base.

Cool, I never planted any this year either. I couldn't find the "National pickling bush' variety I always plant.

Lynne, thanks to your great idea and sharing your picture. I got my hubby to build me a trellis for my greenhouse cucumbers. Actually I should say I showed him the trellis I had and did not like and asked if we could make it work somehow, when he went and built one for me that fits just perfect. Makes gardening so much easier when the load is shared huh. When some of the cucs start to climb I'll post a piture for you to see.

I can't wait to see it, Rosepetal!!! Mine has turned into the "runaway cucumber vines!!!" There were 4 seeds planted originally, 3 grew. Now look at it!!! It's taking over the air-conditioner unit, 2 trellises, and is now starting to climb the brick wall behind it! WOWZERS! See all the flowers and babies starting? Biggest one so far - these are yellow, round cucumbers - weird! Hope I get to taste some - last year the vines got moldy before any could develop.

Wow those look great, mine are finally starting to bloom as well. I figure I'll be picking cucs by the end of the week.
The cucumbers that I had on the trellis my hubby made are getting horribly wind tossed and are looking kind of sick already. But those in my garden on the ground are doing just great.

Lynne I'm not sure what happened but I lost all the cucs in my greenhouse. I'll try a special greenhouse seed next year.

Plants in a greenhouse don't get a chance to 'harden off' so any change in temperature or wind is death to them.

That's probably what happened, we are getting high winds lately and it does come into the greenhouse. The leaves were yellow and horrible already. I will get better seeds for next though, someone mentioned to me that there are cucumber seeds available special for greenhouse growth.

This has become a runaway cucumber vine!!! It is now growing up the large evergreen tree that is next to it! Lots of flowers on the vines, but not too many cucs?!?

Whoa, that vine looks like this python vine that was eating my rose of Sharon Tree! Couldn't find the end of it for a week, but I must have chopped something right because there's this brown snake hanging from the tree where the vine used to be! Siad previously that I am turning a porch rail on it's side to start my cukes and beans in the spring~ but, it will be only about 6.5' high. Guess I'd need 10 of them to hold your vine, Lynne. Sorry about the small fruit harvest. Would cutting that monster back a bit help? Looks like the leaves are swallowing up all the nutrients! kat :ding:

I think you are absolutely correct, kat - I should have cut the vine back so it could place its energy on making fruit instead of vine!!! Here it is today, running even farther!!! And here are 2 cucumbers that are almost ripe - we haven't tried any yet - can't wait!

I found the seed packet and thought I'd share it for anyone who is interested. I got it at Christmas Tree Shops early in the season. And here is my small harvest from yesterday. It surely seems to be taking a whole lot longer than 65 days as the packet states, as I sowed these seeds late May!!! Sheesh!!! The biggest one was about the size of a tennis ball. I have to say... they smell and taste DELICIOUS! Would you ever think the inside would look like this, from looking at the outside?

Oh they're lemon cukes! I've grown them before. My vines didn't get nearly that long! Maybe they like the warm humid air from the A/C unit.

WOW those look good. Do they have some kind of a lemon taste or is the name because of the shape and color?

They taste just like a fresh, crisp cucumber - no lemon whatsoever - it's just the shape and color.
