Meg I would say it's about to bloom! I wouldn't cut it off just yet!! How long have you had it?? Is it in the ground or potted up!??

After it blooms the mamma hen will die. But you should have plenty of chicks to take over.

The main one will die? I have 2 this year - first ones, they are blooming, so the mama will die? Do I have to transplant the thingies that have bloomed or what? They are planted in some big rocks.

Whatever blooms on hen and chicks will die off. But usually you have plenty of babies to take their places. Cutting off the bloom stalks won't stop them from dying. After they start dying pluck them out and you can rearrange the babies to you liking.

i have this happening too. first i noticed that some of the bottom most leaves died. i thought it wasn't getting enough light, so i put it on the plant stand and i just noticed all the new growth in the center is upright rather than laying flat against the other petals. the chicks are still very tiny tho. how big do they need to be before rooting them?

the other hen/chicks is definitely getting ready to bloom...very, very upright growth. and the chicks are very large - should be able to transplant them into their own pots.

neither has a flower spike yet.

meg, post some pics if you can!
