I just signed up...I have been looking for a forum like this! I am having trouble with my dahlias and I hope someone can help. Last fall I planted dinner plate dahlias but now they are blooming as look more like tea cup saucer size. Does anyone have suggestions or recommendations to encourage the large dinner plate blooms?? One type I have is the Thomas Edison, it should be pretty big....has anyone else had similar problems? Thanks, Laura

Hi Laura29 - The same thing happened to a couple of mine last year - I have to buy new bulbs every year because of that - so I am anxious to see if anyone knows why that happens ....

hi laura - i'm a new gardener also so i've had to do alot of research to keep my dahlias healthy. i've read from various sources that if you want to increase the bloom size you can try pinching off the smaller buds that grow around the center one (usually on the same stem). those people who participate in contests often do this to get an enormous bloom. as far as why it's happening this year to you? i've no clue, maybe you will have many more smaller flowers this year vs. larger & fewer flowers last year?? good luck!
