I went to the neighbors and got more potash.

I've added water and siphoned off the stuff that came to the top. It was mostly the black stuff that looked like charcoal. Is that what is suppose to be siphoned off?

I plan to use some of it in the african violets so I want to make sure I have it right.

I still haven't been able to get any african violet plant food. No money yet and there is the big electric bill to worry about.

You are correct the black stuff is not what you want. The stuff left behind should be grayish. Then let it dry to a think powder. After that you mix a very little with potting soil so when you trans plant your AV soil will be all ready. It is to concentrated as is so don't put the freshly made stuff on you plants it will burn them.
