I have a couple of hanging baskets full of scented sweet peas out back and they are producing the most wonderful wall of perfume every time I walk by. Which led me to think of a question for the rest of you, which has probably discussed in this forum a dozen times (but never by me!): what is your favourite garden scent? I began listing my own. Carnations, jasmine, acacia, lilac. But, for me, I still have such fond childhood memories of my dad’s rose garden, where the aroma of damasks, particularly around dusk, was just so intense and unforgettable.

Hmmm, the scent of lilacs remind me of my grandmother.

I have things planted for scent all around my front porch. Gardenias and "Today, Tomorrow and Yesterday". Got some Stargazer lilies just about ready to bloom. And my Angel's Trumpets are greening up. Wasn't sure if I lost them to freezing this year. My lilacs have come and gone. White butterfly ginger for later this summer into fall. Carnations, I need to replant. Mine are about gone. Star jasmine is going good.

I think that, in some ways, the scent of a particular flower can provide us with similar prompts to a particular song on the radio, in that it can bring to mind a certain loved one or relative, or memories of a specific place such as a holiday. And I probably shouldn’t say that the whiff of the Amorphophallus titanum, or ‘corpse plant’, reminds me of my brother’s feet after he's just taken his socks off!

My mother is a scent gardener. It is very important to her to have everything in her garden smell good. I am not so much like that. I love lilies of the valley first and then sweet peas and lilacs. I keep a bouquet of sweet peas on my deck table. They are so delicate. I do not like the strong scent of lilies. They give me a headache.

Tamara - I agree with you absolutely regarding lilies - especially indoors. I cant go into a room that has them as I am soon overcome by queasiness. The only way I can have them in my own house is if I remove the stamens.
