I have an avocado tree I started from a pit. I was living in California now I'm in Wisconsin. It's growing in my house but the trunk is really skinny. Should I prune it or is it too late. The tree is about 8 feet tall.

How wonderful - not only to have started the avocado from seed and grown it into a plant but also to have moved it successfully all the way to a different climactic region.
My experience has been very positive when I've pruned the avocado back on a reasonably regular basis. You still have a good opportunity for the trunk to thicken somewhat (though not appreciably)- nonetheless the pruning will give you considerably denser foliage.
Good luck.

thumbup good answer drb. to have the trunk thicken, it would need several seasons in a warm climate, and that would make it hard to cut back then. as long as you are in wisconsin, and therefore have to pull it in in the winters, you will not have a very thick trunk. HOWEVER, i wouldn't let that stop you from enjoying it! i almost wish i had one...
