I just realized that I planted 3 of these plants. I also just realized that I HATE this kind of squash. Any ideas on how to prepare it so it isn't disgusting? Or, more nicely, how do you prepare this?

Do you have a Food Bank where you could donate unwanted produce?

We do have a food bank but they aren't answering their phone. Is it normal for them to accept fresh produce, even if it is just a couple of items at a time? That is such a great idea, though, I really hope that they can take it. I will call in the morning, maybe they close at 4 or something. Thanks for the suggestion.

I want it I love it. Ok here is the way to prepare it.

Cut it in half scoop out the seeds. Then fork the interior just like you would a potato. Wrap it in a wet paper towel and then put it in the microwave for 15 to 20 minutes depending on your microwave on high.

Take it out and make a sauce of 50% margarine and 50% brown sugar. Place this in the center and along the top and then place in the oven top shelf just 6 inches from the heat for around 5 minutes. Don't let it scorch so watch it carefully. Pull it out and eat yummy.

Or cook it in the micro as above. Then scoop out the meat and put it in a pan with Pumpkin Pie Spices the same amount you would use with a 9 inch pie. Then add 1 cup of a thin white sauce and simmer stirring all the time until it combines and is smooth. Add a mint leaf garnish, again yummy.

You're welcome, Sarah. I hope they'll take your call and the produce too.
I've always liked the idea of growing extra for charity. I think there's something called Second Harvest. If I ever get a real house and a real garden I'd like to learn more and participate.

if you cant get it to your food bank or they wont take it, you could always add it to your compost bin.

Well, I just got ahold of the food bank and they do accept garden produce. I'm so excited to have a place to give my extras too. I have harvested 10 yellow summer squash in the past few days and now I don't have to eat it all. Woohoo!

I'll try your recipe, Tammy, and if I still don't like it, or if I have too much, I'll just donate it to the food bank. Thanks so much for the tip, Deborah!

Well, I have my first ripe squash, I was thinking of making it for lunch. I've got a huge load of veggies for the food bank, and will take them tomorrow. Lots of yellow crookneck squash, cukes, and some peppers. Now, we'll have to wait and see how I like the squash!

Tammy, I really like brown sugar and butter. Yum! Unfortunately, I'm not too keen on the squash. It was no where near as reviling as I remembered it being, though. Thanks for the recipe, anyway.
