It's a pwetty widdle heron, yes you are, yes you are! I loike herone but they would be a problem around a fish pond.

Loz, you should have Great Blue Herons in your area. Check out all the lake, ponds, rivers and Streams in your area. I evewn have one or two Great Blue Herons fly over the roof o f my house every evening......and I am 5 miles from the nearest water.

This map shows them further east.

I'm way out west in the panhandle, and although it says they can be found statewide during parts of the year I've never saw a heron ever. tears

We just installed a tiny pond this spring (maybe 5' across). I doubt fish would survive in it past summer but we're thinking of experimenting with minnows to see if a heron WILL stop over sometime. We have a large lake just one street over from us.

Now, if we had koi or some other specialized expensive fish in there, I'd feel the same way as you about it!

All the best,
Tammie

I heard rumors they also can "introduce" fish into ponds once the fish run out, I am very tempted to hide my goldfish and find out grin

Loz, you show me some Eagles, and I'll show you some herons. Herons are extremely graceful and skilled flyers.

I've been told if you put a heron statue in your pond the real ones will look elsewhere for their breakfast.

Thorn puts family statues in his kitchen so his REAL family will look elsewhere for their breakfast.

Thorn did not hear you as he is busy shoving tons of breakfast foods down his drooling maw, while his starving family scours the fields and woods for anything REMOTELY edible.

Those are some really great photos. I guess they're a pest when you have a pond, but they sure are beautiful. I have Sandhill Cranes down here but not too many Herons. Good pictures.
