So I bought a bunch of petunias with some other greenery and planted in containers for the deck and the front porch. They get almost full sun and I water about every other day. Well the flowers have fallen off and they aren't producing new ones. How did I screw these up?

Hi Chelle! I am no expert by any means.. but I have always had petunias.. in pots and in the ground.. I find that they need lots of water!! I water mine everyday.. especially the ones you have in pots.. as they can't retain moisture as well as those that are planted in the ground... I give them a good soaking... The ones in hanging baskets I water until they drain out the bottom. thumbup

One of the HUGE hanging baskets that I bought this year isn't looking so hot.. and I was tempted to take a picture of it and post it here.. but I am thinking I will give it a good drink of Miracle Grow and see if that helps.

Another thing that will help is to dead head your Petunias.. you didn't say whether or not you do that.. It will encourage new blooms.. and can be a full time job if you have alot of them.. or very large plants. I have gotten to the point where I don't pluck my big hanging basket.. I shake it! lol Gently of course, but I give each clump of branches hanging down a good shake!! Load of old blooms fall off.. making way for new! flwr

I am sure some of the more expert gardeners will come along to help you as well.. I just wanted to share my two cents.. Good luck!! wavy

dead head = pinching/shaking off the dying blooms? Just checking... novice. Total novice. I'll go give them a good shake today before I weed my tomatoes.

Hi Chelle,

Like PinkHorse pointed out tho': just make sure you shake gently. Branches break very easily.

To deadhead, I just pull off dead blossoms. When they pop out easily, they are ready to come off. If you have to tug too hard, leave them for another day.

Miracle Gro is the best recommendation. Just follow the instructions on it.

One other thing: too much sun can be bad. If they are in an area where they get full sun all day long, they could be scorching. Is it possible that in the worst heat of the day, you could move them to shade for a couple of hours? I've had to do this with some of my potted plants. Morning and evening sun are best, I think.

Hope this is of some help to you! Good luck.

All the best,
Tammie
