Baby birds are able to fly about two weeks after they hatch. We call them Fledglings when they first leave the nest. Your baby APPEARS to be a Song Sparrow, a very GOOD bird to have around, with a BEAUTIFUL song.

Horray....Thorn,

I got one right....I was saying Sparrow all along......You should of seen the great suprise.....I clicked the camera and it must of scared all 4 and they flew right out......I must of had the most astonished look on my face, cause HD came out and said What happened???;o)
I told him and the mom and dad was flying at me like thunder.......
This was the only one I could catch.. He put it back in the nest and we left.. Later it was gone again.......
So much for my career in birds.

Thanks for Looking.

THe other day HD and I had a cowbird baby captured in some grass, got the camera and it wouldnt work.......What luck......

THis is crazy .

Last year I was photographing a fledgling Blue Jay when I felt a hard impact with a sharp pain on top of my head. Momma or Daddy Blue Jay had attacked me and left a bloody scratch on top of my head. The little fellow survived and is now an adult and a regular visitor to my feeders, along with his parents that attacked me. I put out peanuts in the shell for them on a regular basis.

They are live attacks???????/I dont trust the larger groups like crows.. Sparrows I arent worried of.. Ha ha

Boy they did grow fast ....I though it was like over several weeks till they left.

Ha ha
Suprise for sure.
Now how do you know it is the same birds that you see?

Baby birds have to grow fast or they become a meal for some predator. That and because the migration time is quickly approaching and they must be ready to leave in the early fall. Some adult birds will only come after you if you get too close to their young. Birds are as protective of their babies as any other creature in the world.

I was watching a baby chipping sparrow in my yard yesterday morning. It was in my birch tree. I guess it got tired of waiting for an adult bird to feed it because it fell asleep!

Hmmm .... photo didn't show.... FAQ time!

THIS Baby Blue Jay had some distinctive markings that made him easy to identify and I now have an adult Blue Jay with those same markings coming to my feeders every day, so I know it's him.
