Baby birds are able to fly about two weeks after they hatch. We call them Fledglings when they first leave the nest. Your baby APPEARS to be a Song Sparrow, a very GOOD bird to have around, with a BEAUTIFUL song.

Last year I was photographing a fledgling Blue Jay when I felt a hard impact with a sharp pain on top of my head. Momma or Daddy Blue Jay had attacked me and left a bloody scratch on top of my head. The little fellow survived and is now an adult and a regular visitor to my feeders, along with his parents that attacked me. I put out peanuts in the shell for them on a regular basis.

Baby birds have to grow fast or they become a meal for some predator. That and because the migration time is quickly approaching and they must be ready to leave in the early fall. Some adult birds will only come after you if you get too close to their young. Birds are as protective of their babies as any other creature in the world.
I was watching a baby chipping sparrow in my yard yesterday morning. It was in my birch tree. I guess it got tired of waiting for an adult bird to feed it because it fell asleep!
Hmmm .... photo didn't show.... FAQ time!

THIS Baby Blue Jay had some distinctive markings that made him easy to identify and I now have an adult Blue Jay with those same markings coming to my feeders every day, so I know it's him.
