I came across this echinacea today...it's supposed to be a double decker echinacea, but as you can see it looks almost like a dahlia. I can't wait to see if the rest of the blooms look the same or if it's just some freak of nature on that bloom. It looks similar to another echinacea called Razzmatazz, but not exactly the same. If I save seeds from that one bloom, will I get a plant with those blooms?
Alan - I just looked at echinacea purpurea Razzmatazz in my Thomson & Morgan catalogue and it's described as 'a most remarkable and unique discovery'. But its 'only' a double and I think you're one beats that for looks - if it isn't a one-off freak and does produce similar seedlings maybe you have stumbled across a unique new variety. And if so, does that mean that you get to name it? (e.g., 'Razmatazz Alankhart' has a neat ring to it, dont you think!)
I thought it looked like a zinia too! If its a hybrid though, which I believe it is, the babies from its seeds will probably be different than momma plant there. Could be really nice babies anyway.
tissue culture and make yourself some big bucks lol that is a beautiful coneflower, I've never seen one like it before, rewally looks like a zinnia/dahlia

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee
Some hybrids are sterile and some as mentioned before don't breed true. But I would definitely give it a shot just encase you have a viable subject there.
You can also propogate the plant by root division. This is your best bet for getting a viable clone for your plant. Good luck with it. Hope you have a viable mutation that you can name and patent.
being hybrid its color may be different.I have a purpleish-pink coneflower and one of the seedheads I sowed was a paler pink color.so I moved it to another bed(It looks horrible.I moved it when we were in the 90s with no rainfall)but it should look great blooming next year and will have the BES to help make it stand out.I think its put out 3 blooms since being moved.I like yours though.I'd love to try out a seedhead for WS.From what I've read...............
It don't realiably produce double blooms the 1st year(I assume the alfalfa spike) can take 2 year for the roots to establish.
Does it smell?have fragrance? Eugen Schleipfer is the breeder of this plant. Its bred in Germany. His family has a nursery in Germany
It has no fragrance to speak of. If the other buds come out the same I will try to propogate it from root division and see what happens. If I don't get any more blooms like it I guess it was just a freak bloom.
