Okay, while in San Francisco last month I came across this plant quite a bit. It appeared the blooms were spent on most, but found a few on tail end with blue blooms.

What is this plant named?

Here's a pic I took of one in bloom.

It is lovely. I don't know what it is but I bet it is one of those seaside plants that won't do well in my desert-y atmosphere. I'm checking my books.

and alankhart,
You are so smart. I just googled your answer, echium fastuosum flwrand yep, that's them. Cool plants I hadn't come across until San Francisco. I read where they do well to zone 9. That's me! Thanks again so much.

I really envy you...I've always wanted to grow them but I'm only in zone 7, so grow one for me! :-)

alankhart,
From the looks of this plant I've seen in SF, one may need PLENTY of space in order to grow them. I would probably have to try them in pots.

Thanks Penny
