thought I had gotten all the seed pods
last fall before they opened - GUESS NOT!!!

Don't mind the ornamental grass in the middle here -
LOOK at allllllll those baby cleome - YIKES!

You're right. They'll show up where you least expect them. Last year I had them in my vegetable garden.

I don't pinch mine back and they do get tall. I think they're pretty so I don't mind where they show up. I left them in the vege garden and I wonder if that's why I didn't have bugs eating my tomatoes and other plants.

You know what I wonder too Triss is if they are biennials. One year my flower garden was full of them and the next year I didn't have any, then last year I had a few in the flower garden and a bunch in the vege garden. The bees like them too, so it's a good thing to have them around the garden for pollination purposes I guess.

I usually do not end up cutting mine back, because I like the flowers so much, but it will definitely get bushier if you do cut it. Mine were so tall I had to stake them and also tie them up a bit.

Mine also attract many bees, and I even had grasshoppers on one last year.

they are annualds not bieannuals, wonder why yours did that?

i get grasshopers on mine every year rspb i also steaked and tied em, they still kept leaning over to one side or the other, thumbup i also planted them inbetween the p-grasses, they look realy nice together.

A garden I visited on a garden walk had beautiful mid-size bushy cleome with lots of blooms. My group thought it might be the new sparkler variety. Upon inquiring we learned the owner pinches out the middle of the plant the day prior to it going into the ground.

I dislike the odor of cleome. That might be what kept pests away from the veggie garden. That observation should be shared with your state ag college or the county extension office. It might be the next organic or companion breakthrough in gardening.

Triss - did you see those pictures up above? lol why
I don't think I'll be planting ANY cleome this year - the job has been done for me already! why But yes, they are the purple, and also pink/white from last year, so it will be a surprise color when they bloom.

I don't mind the smell too much, but apparently it is enough to keep the deer off of it, so it's definitely a keeper!!! Some people think it smells like SKUNK! shock

interesting, mine got about 4 1/2 feet tall and I didn't pinch them so I only had blooms at the very top. I'll have to keep that in mine I would like to have more of the flowers. The thing I didn't like about them is that every japanese beetle in the neighborhood headed straight for them. They were on every stem of every seed pod of the plant.

I harvested the seeds I wanted and then cut off the rest before they were mature so I don't have any volunteers.

Triss, mine aren't up yet either so it's probably not warm enough where you are.

Cone flowers aren't up yet either. A lot of stuff is already blooming but the cones are usually a little later. It was cold here yesterday and is today so I don't know what will happen with the cones.

Still growing, though I've yanked out hundreds - I am going to let them get just a little bit bigger and keep the healthiest looking 3 or so...

i just put some seeds (cleome, not coneflower) out today in a couple of different spots. one is very sunny most of the day and the other is shaded until early afternoon.

temps here are still going down to mid 50's or so at night. generally the days have been minimum of 70 with a few much hotter days here and there.

about when could i expect to see sprouts? thx!

I planted cleome seeds a while ago - I have not patience. They are coming up sparingly, heading to the nursery to buy some PLANTS. I really want these this year!

Tk, I have never seen a JP on mine. They eat my roses to pieces though and our fruit trees.

Still no coneflowers. We had a freeze the last of April after the stuff around here had already starting coming up and some even blooming. It was 24 degrees a few nights in a row and a lot of my flowers got hit. Now it hasn't rained for 2 months so nothing is growing.

I just found a whole bunch of cleome on the VERY SHADY North side of my house. None of them are very big, but all of them are flowering. I didn't plant any of them. Where could they have come from? Is there a perennial variety?? And why would they be up in Minnesota in the shade, and not up in NC? Are they shade-loving?

WOW Diane - yours look terrific!
Very healthy too!

It amazes me how many different colors I have ended up with over the years.
I've been growing them for about 4-5 years now, and it all started with 1 purple plant, but now I have dark purple, lighter lilac color, and a few different pinks with white! I am loving them all!
