Lamiastrum.

Finally got the name right.

We went out the other night to try to get more - we only got one plant, even though we went to 4 or 5 different gardening centres.

We want to do the whole circle with it.

Lotsa' time yet.

This actually became Jeff's patch - he cleaned it up and got it started this year.

I'm waiting for the wild geranium to come in there - I planted it 3 years ago - right in the point part of it.

The rest of the plants are lemon balm, mint and some bugle weed that Jeff planted - he can't find it now.

This is what I've been working on since Friday - the ferns? The neighbour two doors up - Ian - he's working on the edges of his lawn - usually he just runs the mower over the ferns that are too close to the grass - now, due to my request, he's saving them for me.

[Linked Image]

Those ferns (3 of them) are an outstanding success - we put them in last night and they did not droop. Good sign, I think.

[Linked Image]

You will notice the piece of wrought iron in there - yeah - well . . . those are the ends of benches. Another donation from Ian.

I'll be back tonight or tomorrow with some of my pictures - I'm just taking pictures of my work in progress today. Jeff took all of these today.

Ha ha! They're newel posts - you know, the knobs?

Jeff found them last year, so I put them around. I'm going to use them somewhere else, I think - maybe even throw them out.

I did a little more work around the fence - this time in the lower corner (which I call tulsi corner). The edges were too darned wet and muddy.

I went looking in one of my patches for a few pieces of forget-me-not - oh boy! The stuff has quadrupled! I'll be able to do a lot with it - some hasn't started blooming, which is good.

It was like a day in late fall here, Penny. The wind was sensational this morning - seemed like every tree in the neighbourhood was waving back and forth.

We stayed indoors, did a little reading and slept a lot.

Went out later on for a coffee - it was a bit better.

We're supposed to get a high of 17 tomorrow - don't know if that's going to change.

Yes, that's good on the frost thing - I wondered about that too. I don't have much in the way of 'new plants' right now, but there are seedlings coming up.

Yesterday?

A wipe-out! Temps dropped to 10 celsius and the wind was around 40 km!

Some areas in the north had snow! Some had frost - we're ok frost-wise though. In fact, I think everything grew an inch out there.

.................

We began the day with the City's Tree Service at the door - they're taking down that big tree at the end of the walk. Today, it's a few branches that were tangled in the wires.

[Linked Image]

I don't really have good shots of this yet - just got the one there. I'll take some more this afternoon so I'll have it as it is now. Then we can follow the progress of this project as it goes along.

They're going to take the whole thing down! Whew!

It's not a bad tree really - it's just that it interfere's with the wires and that's bad in a storm - down comes the wires, out goes the electricity.

I started working my way up the slope at Tulsi Corner - you can't see it all that well, but it's been raked out, soil put on the edges.

I'm giving up on trying to grow grass there . . . I'll be planting. There's enough growth on this lot right now to use.

This part of the south island slope is looking a lot tidier these days:

Tomato Plants!

Moira brought this on Sunday - she was out walking and somebody discarded the leftovers.

And the landlady brought some tomato plants.

It's something I never buy for myself - I just do them if they happen to come along. They're a lot of work, I know from past experience - that's why I don't go out and buy them - ha ha!

[Linked Image]

I've got another bucket of them out behind the triangle.

The seedlings are growing in Morning Glory Patch (there are no morning glories in there this year - unless any strays come in from last year):

[Linked Image]

I'm not sure what they are - some cosmo, sweet peas, etc. I just threw in all the packages I had - I've forgotten what they are. I've thinned some of the sweet peas into the fence garden - have to do some more thinning, I guess.

This is the back of 'the point' on middle-lot. It's got the variegated stuff Pat brings over in it - I put it in last year - Jeff cleaned it up a little and it's come in nicely:

[Linked Image]

The Point, itself isn't moving along all that quickly this year - the bulb plants didn't come up yet - maybe they're not going to - they might have been eaten.

This is what I call mish-mash - there's some plantain that is coming in taller this year - it's just scrub stuff I find around the yard and add to it:

[Linked Image]

There are some tall wild daisies in there too.

Needs tidying up, of course.

Nicole! Believe it or not - something you've sent is coming up this time!

The Hollyhock - here it is, as I saw it coming on Sunday and how it looks after I thinned some of the Queen Anne out of there:

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

I hope more comes up - and I hope I didn't rake out the seeds when I tidied it up. I'm looking around the perimeter carefully.

Forget-Me-Nots in behind the trees here on south island . . .

[Linked Image]

There's so much of it this year! This time I won't worry about running out of the plants - it will be running out of places to put it!

It needs shade, of course.

--------------------

The Ferns

These are doing fine - I was kinda' worried when we had the wind storm yesterday, but they look as good as they did when we put them in Sunday and Monday.

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m320/WildCityWoman/Ferns0606.jpg

Notice how neatly I have that piece of wrought iron now - I dug its feet into the ground.

There's another one, of course - the other end of the bench that Ian took apart. You can see it leaning against the tree.

Once I've levelled that strip beside it off, I'll put the other bench end in.

Then I'll put some more shade plants between them.

--------------------

Well, it's still cold this morning - I gotta' go to the heart doctor's. Jeff's going out on a little 'car' business - more on that later.

I'm hoping to transplant some more forget-me-not this afternoon and tonight.

Ha ha! OK . . . it's not bothering anybody, I guess. I don't know where it is now anyway.

........

We had a much better day - cool, but nice.

While Jeff went out to get our new car (another Saturn - 2004, this time), I puttered around, transplanting forget-me-nots.

The lady up the street says that's no good, 'cause it dies off right away. Well, I'll have the 'green' there anyway.

So I just worked haphazardly with that - a little here, a little there.

No big jobs today.

Today's hot, but I'm staying away from the sunny spots.

We have my granddaughter here right now - we're going to have soup and pizza, then she is going to garden with me - hopefully, we won't get that thunderstorm till later tonight.

I'm going to have her transplant forget-me-nots with me - there's so many of them in the grass.

This is better than just 'babysitting'. It's something constructive to do with her.

It's like that all over the city.

We're going out to Cobourg tomorrow - hope it stays nice for the run.

Helping the world one seed at a time

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. Mary Ann LaPensee

We were lucky - we had a lotta' trees down, but it was worse in other places, as you've probably seen already.

Don Mills subdivisions - they don't have a lotta' big trees, do they?

My ex-husband's folks used to live on Niantic out there - I don't remember much trees.

That was a long time ago.

I'm going to put some pictures of the mess in the yard.

Then I'll put up the gardening I did with my granddaughter after the storm.

Ahhhhhhh! I'm behind on my gardening postings - how about I just link ya' to my garden journal at Wild City?

I've done them there . . .

Go to around the bottom of that page to see more than I have here, then go on to page 2 to see what I've been doing up to yesterday.

I didn't do much Wednesday - just too darn hot.

I'm hoping to finish cleaning up that part of the yard tomorrow (today).

I think I'll just go pluck the stuff I want to transplant, then let Jeff run the mower over it all - then I'll rake.

I'm not doing a whole lot right now - too hot. I'm sleeping during the day a lot. Back to me old habits - ha ha!

I did get some more cyclamens (freebies). There were 12 and I gave 2 away. I've just set them around the lot - digging them in as I come to them. They never do well for me indoors, but they seem to work if I dig them into the soil on the lot here.

Other than that, I've been weeding out the forget-me-nots and putting them in different spots. And a general cleanup of another part of the lot I'm working on.

I'm doing about 2 hours a day and that's in the late afternoon or early evening when it's cooler.

Too hot!

Carly dont go nuts buying the laiastrum/lamium/ variegated stuff. It will spread esily. Wherever a branch leans down and touches the soil roots will form at the nodes. grin

Yes, I'm noticing that.

I'm really pleased with the way last year's plant grew and spread out.
