I'm still sooooo excited. I just got several hundred dollars in daylilies FREE! There was an ad in our paper for free daylilies, so I thought why not call. There's this guy that lives out in the country about 25 miles from me who has 25 acres, part is wildlife reserve and the other part is his home and daylily garden. He has over 100 different daylilies. Every few years they need to be divided, but because he's disabled, he can't charge money for them so he gives them away! You can get up to 10 clumps free. Well, naturally I thought they would be tiny little clumps, but oh no...he digs the ones you want and gives you huge clumps. Most came from Oaks and originally ranged in price from $12 to $100! I got one of the $100 ones, several $35 ones and not sure about the rest. I even got one of his own un-named cultivars. I'm soooo excited! Now I have to plant them, though...

I'm sorry about the lilies...when did you plant them? Orinetal lilies will often come up late or even the next year when they are planted late in spring. I hope this is the case with those.

I rented a sod cutter this morning and created a bed that goes around the edge of the brick edging of my yard. Then I raised the area up with bags of compost and planted them all, along with some boulders I dug up along the way. I'll post a pic as soon as the batteries charge.

Ok...here's a photo of where I planted 8 of them. This is only temporary for some because I plan on adding a few dwarf evergreens as well. The poor grass in my back yard is crispy brown because we're in a severe drought.

Oh, very nice Alan. What a great addition to your lovely gardens.

That is great, Alan. I bet you were in seventh-heaven out there among all the day lilies. Congratulations on the new plants!

He actually invited me to come back in a week or two to get some of the later blooming ones, so I guess I'll go again!

Gardenkitten: I rented it at a place called United Rentals. Not sure if they are national or local. It wasn't cheap. $86 a day or $54 half day.

The sod cutter actually helps make the curves neat as long as you hold it steady enough, which isn't too hard to do if you don't put in on high.

I rented it...about $90 a day. Not sure how much it would be to buy one.

The one I had wasn't very big, about the size of a tiller, but it was very heavy, so I had to rent a trailer as well.
