Here is a picture of my rose Canadian Explorer Series John Davis:
[Linked Image]

It has twice as many blooms this week. It is growing in all directions and it is getting tough to aim it toward the arbor. Should I keep tying it or do some pruning? If I prune, when? Or is it possible to take a cutting and root it for someone else? I suppose it is 5 years old. I have only pruned the nasty bits -wood that isn't producing well. I have read that that is all that is necessary to do. But now it is so big. ?

the pieces that have grown out and away from the trellis can be pruned off. before you cut, look for a bud/node that is facing towards the trellis and cut right above it. the new growth will go in towards the trellis.

if you cut where the bud/node is facing outward, new growth will face outward.

looks beautful, btw!! i actually like it when a few canes, here and there, aren't on the trellis and are kind of going off on their own like what you've got happening!

Tamara, that is filling in beautifully. Very nice.

You could cut off the outward facing stems right now and put the roses in a vase.

~~Tam~ You can bury all your troubles by digging in the dirt.

Ok! Thanks so much! ;) I just wish that variety was more fragrant.
I will trim soon to shape. I also fertilized and composted this weekend.
Here are pics from this morning.

Thanks so much. I highly recommend the Canadian Explorer series for northern gardeners. I am also going to be buying some hardy shrub roses soon. I don't think I'll ever get into the 'real thing' here in MN.

These are roses listed in my ARS that were grown for trial for a 5 yr period in South Burlington Vermont(Z4)/Stillwater maine(Z5a)/New england& canada((Z3)the prarie area of canada)Trial ran from 1997-2003.The explorer seris failed in canada(a zone 3)They trialed over 130 roses.I listed the fragrant ones that had a rateing of 4-5(rateings we're 1-5) 4 was a 75% regrowth with minimal pruneing. In the maine trial they used 12 inches sifted mulch the 1st year in nov after ground froze, but none the following years.98-2000 we're coldest years for VT&99-2000 we're coldest years for ME CA did not list coldest years, but if it failed in canada.I did not list it.Canada mentioned that if the canes had been wraped or better protected more would have passed the trial. The folks that produce the canada explorer series we're one of the groups in this trial& have developed roses since then from lessons leraned from this trial.
