OK
I know where they are & what the seed pod looks like. I know the pod should be brown before harvesting but dont let the wind get 'em first.
There are some gorgeous dark purple ones in my parking lot. They've gone to pod. Can I snip the whole stem off the plant before the pods turn brown or should I wait, hope nobody else snatches them first, and leave them alone?

you have to leave them alone until they turn brown and start to open on the plant or the seeds will be immature and wont sprout. Sorry to be the barer of bad news.

Do you think you could "borrow" part of the columbine plant itself-(you know roots & all)- & bring it home?? if they are weed waking it anyway, it should not be a problem, right??
then you could grow it and harvest the seeds at your leasure---

notme I tried to on the mama plant last year but she was growing right next to a tree in article 4 ( driveway gravel and shale dust, very hard to dig) I am going to look at the other plants and see how hard it would be to take one.

I'll check mine, I have about 15 different kinds planted. I should post pics of them so I can send out seeds. I planted a few new varieties last fall, don't know what kind they are yet, they have only started to bloom here.

I'll get pics today and tomorrow, so you can see if you'd like some.

I buy alot of my plants at the end of season when they have no tags and are only 50 cents. I throw them in the ground, wait to see what they are then move them wherever the next fall. Just found out one of my plants is a "Goatsbeard", not bad for two shiney quarters in trade.
