My pitcher plant is in dire need of transplanting. I purhcased another hanging pot for the it but I need to know what mixture/kind soil should I use? I have on hand spagnum moss and sand.
Here's a pic
Here's a view of soil
One more question. Should I cut off the shriveled pitchers?
Yes Stephanie cut off the shriveled Pitchers AFTER they have completly shriveled up,, More pitchers will form on Other leaves but not again on the leaves you cut them off off!! For soil you can use vermiculite and spagnum IF you don't have Vermiculite Then spagnum and orchid mix will work or spagnum and coconut fiber and bark There are lots of soil formulas depending where you look on the net,, Spagnum and vermiculite seem to be universal.. I use a mix of vermiculite ,coconut fiber, a little peat, spagnum, orchid mix and silica sand HAHAHAHA lots of stuff and it seems to be happy!!! I just never use any regular potting soil of any type at all!,, When you water greatly dilute super thrive in a gallon of distilled water or rain water when you trans~pot it up, ~~No direct sun Likes dappled sun or morning sun afternoon shade for our areas.

Thanks so much Diane I knew I could count on a response from you. I'll go to the store today and try for vermiculite and spagnum. I'm not sure if they sell just the vermiculite since I already have the spagnum. We'll see. I'll post a pic after I get it transferred.
Tom ~~ They are selling the huge pitchers here too!! OMG I had never seen anthing that huge!!! The pitchers were at least 10 - 12" long and the center outside of them looked hairy!!!! Is this the one you got??
Stephanie~~ your welcome!!!

WOW Jimmy - what great finds you got there!!! Our HD, only gets in a few pathetic VFT, I've never seen any of the more interesting carnivorous plants there. Of course now I'm on the lookout since Diane sent me my very first one!
Diane I buy these for my African Violets like I give my Dentist Secretaries they are self watering from the bottom I buy at WM for 86 to 98 cents each. Also this batch has Super Thrive in it for the transplant as well my Brome's needed a shot too. Lynne a man we work with told us about them at HD I made a bunch of them before I found these I cleaned them out.

Cool Carniverous plants Jimmy! What mixture did you use for soil with transplanting? Yeah, those pots look great for the plants. So I take it you have them inside right?
I've been a little under the weather the past few days so I was not able to purchase a mixture to transplant mine. Hopefully can do it next week.
Floweringchild I did the mixture Diane figured up and gave me some of. No I have them on my porch where the bugs are they love it out there . will bring them in this winter if it gets cool enough. Nepenthes mixture: 2-part Long fiber Sphagnum Moss 1-part Coconut Fiber Bark 1-Part Orchid Bark mix (med.) 1-Part Peat Moss 1-Part Charcoal 1-Part Silica Sand. You can buy the Orchid mix with Charcoal and all in it does not have enough moss or silica in it. Hope this helps

Hi Jimmy, I went off today to Home Depot for vermiculite or orchid mix and would you believe they did not have either. No coconut mixture either. I then stopped at K Mart and they did not have either. I was going to do the vermiculite and spagnum or orchid mix and spagnum combination angelblossom mentioned but now that's on hold. I already have spagnum.
Stephanie!! PM me your addy and I can send you some coconut fiber and vermiculite OR I will make you a bag mixture of the reciepe Jimmy posted! I sent Triss a bag of it with her pitcher and Jimmy a bag of it!! I will be happy to help you out! I have plenty of each item listed in the reciepe sooo it's no big deal!!

My pitcher plant you gave me is doing good will get a picture of it and send it your way! I have not transplanted it yet I did went out and got a hanging pot to put it in but kind of scare to transplant it worry it may not make it and I love this plant and do not want it to die but I also know got to do it soon bye for now Rita
Got this Sarracencia "Judith Hindle'" Pitcher plant today. both photo's is same plant. Notice how the pitcher's grow up. This is a great bog plant as it grows in bogs in natural habitat.

I have a catalogue from a ponding store nearby, and they have one of those in the catalogue - we were supposed to go there today, but got sidetracked, so hopefully sometime this weekend. I wonder if it would be hardy here in zone 6a? Does your tag mention the hardiness by any chance?
Jiffy they could be same variety as they are native to Florida and the southeast. Lynne the tag and also the link I sent you say these are hardy to zone 7. When the temp drops below 20 for several day could kill them they do go dormant in the winter says to place in a sheltered unheated dark place like a garage or closet as long as temp is low so they can stay dormant till spring.

My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
I'm hoping someone can help me with my pitcher plant. I bought it about two months ago.....I transplanted it as it was too large for the flowerpot. Now the leaves are all curling under and the one tiny pitcher that formed is dieing.....

I don't think it's overwatered......?
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks in advance,
Kratz7
Kratz7 what soil mixture did you use? Also use only rain water or distilled water. Did it get too cold?
In this thread early on I posted a soil mixture that works real well Angelblossom gave it to me I used it to repot my two Alata's Saturday they are doing great. You said they had outgrown the pot how much larger did you go ? I like to keep mine tight in the post they seem to do better for me at least.

I used a soil mixture of potting soil sand and a type of bark stuff produced for orchids. very similar to the mix it was originally planted in. I did have it sitting by the back door, which is open end closed alot. Maybe it didn't like the cold air....? That seemed to help a bit..... I wanted to check the roots, but I don't want to upset the apple cart anymore than I have already. I'll try to post a photo of it later today. The leaves were curling under......but haven't turned yellow or anything yet......... I'm hoping to save it before that happens. I'll try the distilled water, since I haven't collected rainwater lately.......
Thanks for your help.....hopefully it will live through this trauma......
These like WARM temperatures, no cool temps! Also distilled or rainwater ONLY. Spray leaves with a 1/4 strength fertilzer (miracle grow or orchid food is fine once every 2-3 weeks if pitchering isn't happening. Bright light, no direct sun.

Stephanie It looks really healthy!! Looks like it's almost time to cut of the old pitchers too!! Give it a couple of weeks or so to get adjusted I'm sure it will be fine!!!
