My MIL gave me some beutiful peonies last fall and told me to clip the blossoms this spring. They are just starting to get little knobbys on them and I'm very reluctant to follow her advise. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Also - I have another very large peony that I'd like to split and move. Should I wait until fall, or doesn't it matter?

After peonies bloom you can cut off the old blooms to make it look nicer and to prevent a common fungus called botritis. The best time to divide them is in the fall.

sometimes it's good to cut of the bud on a newly transplanted specimen to give it more time to acclimate itself so you will be paid by getting more blooms next year. But I could never bring myself to do it.

Another question, what's the difference between a peony plant and a peony tree? Is it just the size?

Herbaceous peonies die back down to the ground in winter. Tree peonies form a woody tree-like base that doesn't die back, but they do lose their leaves.

Tree peonies are also a graph rather than a plant you can get from seed.

So a peony plant is more like a perennial then? I was going to buy one the other day but I was confused.

O.k. now I will be getting one. Can anyone suggest a smaller variety around two feet high or so?
The ones I seen the other day were white, I'd rather a pink or red. Even an orange.

ABALONE PEARL pink standing about 26 inches tall. BLAZE red standing about 28 inches tall. CYTHEREA rose pink about 24 to 30 inches tall. HEIDI pink 26 inches tall. MANDARIN'S COAT Deep Magenta 26 inches tall. There are also dwarf varieties but I couldn't find them listed on the internet. I'm not very good with search engines. Orange are very hard to find. And I didn't know whether you would be interested in the singe or semi-double blooms. I'm partial to the double blooms.

I've never had one before so anything goes. I will mark down those names and call a few nurseries. Thanks.
Mandarin's Coat sounds beautiful.

It's not a full double but other than that it is a very pretty flower. I forget the name of the nursery I was looking at when I found that one. There is a midwest peony society heartland I think it is called that has a gallery of pictures of different types of peonies. And many of them have datasheets giving details about them. Just a thought.

Cool, My choices will be from what the local nursery has to offer though. Hoping they have more than white.

Well if you are sure. Brecks has some really nice deals on peony right now at prices I couldn't touch at a local nursery. And they have a coupon for 25.00 dollars off on a 50 dollar purchase. That how I got my latest two. Inspector Lavergne Peony is a fully double deep red color that is just gorgeous, and the sherbert is a nice pink fully double plant. I'm not sure of there heights though.

What about moving peonies? I have one that's in almost full shade. I want to move it to a spot that gets more sun. I know I should wait until it goes dormat, but I do not know how to move it and exactly when it goes dormat.

they don't like to be moved. if it's doing well where it is, then i'd leave it.
if you really do want to move it, do it in the fall. you need to carefully dig up the tuber - make sure you get the whole thing - and replant it at the same depth it was at before (couple of inches). when you replant, make sure the eyes are facing up.
also, if you move it, don't expect it to bloom for 3-4 years, at least. i'm still waiting for blooms on the one i moved 3 years ago...thought i saw buds forming a few weeks ago - just more leaves. ah, well. maybe next year!

It's in the shade, and a tree is choking it out. I have had two blossoms on it, so I am a little worried about its well-being.
I'll think about moving it. Make sure I am ready to do it without hurting it.

Tamara look out for the bargains. I got some of the tubers at Wal-mart for dirt cheap they were sports. If you look at the heartland peony societies gallery of peonies you'll find that they come in many different forms. So of which aren't really appealing to me at least. I wouldn't want you to wait years for a bloom and then find out that it wasn't something you liked. Just a caution because I didn't know and got jipped.
