I remember my grandmother saving these things and putting them in her garden pretty regularly. Does anyone else do this? What purpose does it serve? What's the best way to do it? Which types of plants would appreciate it?

Egg shells will leach calcium into the soil and coffee grounds work as a mild fertilizer, adding nitrogen. I add dried and crushed egg shells to my planting holes for the tomatoes and I sprinkle coffee grounds everywhere when I feel like it. I don't drink coffee, so I stop by starbucks and pick up a HUGE free bag of grounds about every once a month.

If you experience BER on your tomatoes it is time to add egg shells. I use my coffee grinder to grind the egg shells into powder so it can get into the soil eaiser.

Coffee grounds are slightly acidic so your roddy's, azaleas, evergreens and other acid loving plants will appreciate them.

Yard wastes like leaves, grass clippings, straw and non-woody plant clippings produce high quality compost with ease.If you need more nitrogen feathers, hair, blood meal, tea leaves, manure(not pet feces which can transmit diseases)and green plants will help. For Potassium wood ash(add when compost is being turned)banana peels oak and fruit tree leaves. If phosphorus is what you need bone meal is great. And of course egg shells are a must a you can't go wrong with coffee grounds.Just don't add whole eggs, meat or dairy it will attract rodents.Oh yea vegetable scraps are a must. But I only do cold composting because I like having the worms in my compost pile they help brake up my pile.

I hot compost but those little worms just dig deeper into the dirt below the compost pile and then come back up when it cools off. They are smart little dickens.

Try putting a very ripe banana peel at the base of an old rose bush. It helps renew the color.

I just got through brewing a pot of coffee. Guess where me and the grounds are heading to?
