Sometimes ya' see sumptin' dat just blows you away. A couple of weeks ago, at a horse pasture a mile from my house, I took a picture of cooperation in obtaining food, from entirely DIFFERENT species of birds that have nearly IDENTICAL diets, habit preferrence, and hunting methods. They were working together AS A TEAM to help themselves and each other catch enough insects to eat. An Eastern Kingbird and a male Eastern bluebird were taking turns flushing insects from the deep grass. In addition, a Northern Mockingbird, (not in this picture) made up the third member of the team. It was a classic case of Easts meet North. They did NOT squabble among themselves and appeared to actually ENJOY each others' company.

That's great. I bet you have lots of stories about birds and their habits. I always enjoy reading your posts.

I saw the cutest thing today. Two of the sparrows landed on the a/c unit to get some seeds but the one must have been a very young juvenile because when his dad picked up a seed he started squacking and opening his beak like he wanted to be feed. It was so cute. I love birds.

The baby birds will hunker down with their breasts on the ground, stick out their wings and flutter them rapidly when they want to be fed. Female birds sometimes act this way also, when they want to get the attention of a handsome male bird.

I didn't notice any wing fluttering but I did see the rest. Could have been a female huh? I didn't realize that. Can't say he was all that interested. But the little bird followed him to the telephone wire and then off to where ever he went next.

I love learning all this information, thanks thorny.

This time of year it is almost CERTAINLY a baby bird begging, rather than a female getting romantic.

Adult male and femal Northern Cardinals will also TENDERLY feed each other like a parent and child as part of their courtship ritual.

I'll be watching for that kind of activity. The only thing I saw today besides the sparrows was a lone catbird scratching in the leaf mulch beside one of the beds.
